Hi All
Please enjoy this update. I am hoping to get back into my writing soon!
Word had been sent to the king that the assistant had been found and taken to the shaman. He sighed in relief knowing that she was safe. What he wasn’t prepared for was the line of villagers that stood between him and the shaman’s home when he tried to see the assistant.
While they didn’t threaten him verbally, it was there in their body language. To get through them to do anything would result in a fight. He at least wanted answers, but before he could open his mouth to say anything, an agony-filled scream pierced the air.
Screams were not new to the king. He had killed many brothers. Some had gone down easy, while others had fought to the bitter end. But this scream, this was different. It was defiance, agony, and terror. He stepped back, and as he did, several villagers went into the home hoping for answers.
It would be another hour before the shaman and Venator exited from the house.
“Had it not been for your huntsman, she would be dead.” Said Silens softly, “No thanks to you.”
The king looked over to his man; he was covered in all manner of bodily secretions from trying to bring Kay back to the shaman. He had a grim look on his face.
“Badly broken leg, a few cracked ribs, bruises, severe dehydration…” Silens started listing off symptoms.
“Open fracture, three days.” Said Venator softly.
“She was our guardian.” Shouted someone from the crowd.
“Our valour champion.” Shouted someone else.
The king had every right to defend himself. He could have, but he was a new king, just starting his journey to find potential women to sire youngsters with. He had so much to learn, and stepping on the toes of even backwater villages could spell an end to his rule. It was these people who sheltered his sons until they were ready to war amongst each other. He had taken something from the village that they could never get back.
Valour champions were rare, needing a whole village to agree and a shaman to ink the mark. He looked to Venator, and the huntsman nodded his head.
“Attacked a forest cat as a wolf to protect a hunter.” Said the huntsman, having seen the tattoo himself.
“How could you do this to my friend!” came a shout from the house as Mitis stormed from the house.
In her arms was the first-born son. A boy with downy blonde hair, named Gatex.
“You came all this way to see your boy, so here. Have him. I have more important things to do.” Mitis shoved the infant into its father’s arms and marched back into the house without another word.
The king was speechless. This time wasn’t just about siring sons. It was about making connections amongst his people. To be treated this way by the woman who had left her original calling to ensure his son wouldn’t have the stigma of being born of a shaman hurt.
“Wait.” He called after her.
“It’s best you leave her be.” Said Silens as she laid a hand on his shoulder.
The king stood back, as if burned, but quickly recovered.
“I am truly sorry. It’s not enough; I understand that, but I can’t just leave this as it is.”
Silens, eyebrow raised at the King’s reaction to her touch, stepped back and said, “Then find a way to fix this.”
“How?”
“Help.” Was all Silens said as she returned to the house. “I have need of potent remedies which I don’t have. I will need your huntsmen and likely you.”
She indicated that another woman, already carrying a baby, take the child from the king. He handed over the infant and replied, “I will do what I can.”
“Come, let me show you what I need. You too, Venator. You have shown that you are reliable.”
The two men followed the shaman into her house while the villagers glared, but were not willing to speak out against the shaman’s wishes. The king realised the impact she had made on the village. But what he had sensed when she had touched him, he would need to talk to her about it, but for now, he would play the role he needed.
He walked past the room that Mitis and several other women were in. He blanched when he saw the naked woman on the bed. While the leg wound looked atrocious, the scars that littered her body were abnormal. These weren’t from injuries but systematic cutting into the flesh. The women were trying to wash the muck from her body and prepare her for whatever needed to be done.
“Have some decency, Your Majesty.” Said Silens as she continued to lead him away.
I hope you all enjoyed it!
