Greetings Readers!

I remembered to post this week! Yay! I hope you all enjoy this!

Silens looked up, exhaustion shining on her face, which was quickly replaced with a look of annoyance. “Daughter, what are you doing here?”

“Stopping you from killing yourself.” Saita lifted the old woman from the floor and grimaced at the smell coming from Kay. “What the hell?”

“The wound is sour. Bacteria is leaking into her blood. I have failed in the task you set for me.”

“Hush.” Said Saita as she walked the woman out of the room to another.
She noted the other woman had already retired to another room and seemed to have settled in bed already.

“Who is that?”

“My grandmother.”

Saita sighed and muttered, “I am sorry. I had hoped that I sent you far back enough that you wouldn’t run into family.”

“I didn’t even know until she named her son. Saita…” Silens pulled back to look at her daughter-in-law. “Kay saved my father’s life. Breathed life into an infant who was strangled at birth. If it hadn’t been for her…”

“Mother, you need to rest.”

“I need to…”

“I’ll watch over her.”

Silens fixed Saita with a look that she understood. She looked away. Not five minutes ago, she had wished death upon the Fell Dragon, and she was sure that Silens knew that.

“She still hides from me.” Sighed the woman sadly, “What has she done that she thinks I couldn’t forgive her?”

“You can sense her?”

“Now and again. I’m getting old, and the shaman powers are growing.” Silens looked over Saita’s shoulder, as if looking at the one who remained hidden.

“Get some rest; I will sit with her until morning.”

Silens took Saita’s hands and noticed the blood on them. She didn’t question it but rather reached for Saita’s scarred cheek and held her softly for a while before joining their foreheads.

“I have no right to ask this of you, but please. You do not know what she has been through. Please.”

Saita remembered how the older woman had sat with her as her mind was broken and rebuilt when she wanted to remember her painful childhood. For Silens to beg, citing Kay’s past, softened Saita’s hate just a little.
“I will keep her alive during the night, but I am no healer. All I can do is stabilise what life force she has left and…and share some with her.”

“It is a lot that I am asking of you.”

“You would have killed yourself keeping her alive. Sleep, but make sure that you relieve me in the morning. I wouldn’t want your people finding me and querying the similar faces.”

Silens held onto Saita a little longer before leaving to the room where she would be resting. Saita took that as a silent acknowledgement of what she needed to do. Gritting her teeth, she returned to the room with the muttering Kay.

It felt like only yesterday that Saita had last seen her, but going by the healed tattoo on Kay’s wrist, it must have been some time. Staring at the tattoo was the only thing that prevented Saita from looking at the rest of the Fell Dragon.

In the dim light of the fire close by, Saita could see Kay’s skin was blue with bruising and slick with sweat. She was muttering under her breath and shying away from something in her dreams bleeding into reality.

Saita laid the back of her hand against Kay’s brow. It was hot. Noticing a cup of something sitting close, Saita lifted the Dragon’s head and offered her some of the drink. Kay thrashed away and hoarsely spat.

“Leave me be!”

Saita was almost tempted to give in to Kay’s demands, but she paused when the Fell Dragon continued.

“I didn’t mean to.”

It was an odd thing for her to say. Kay had always been adamant that she had always been a monster. Knowing exactly what she was doing and not caring. This sentence made no sense.

Saita knew it was no use asking her directly, not with her brain fever-addled. However, her curiosity was piqued. She left the room to locate some sort of kitchen where she could find some cloth and cool water. Once she located what she wanted, she took a bowl of cool water and a cloth to the room that Kay resided in.

The muttering had stopped, but Kay would occasionally thrash her head to the side and grimace. Fresh sweat was running down from her forehead. Saita came to sit on the injured woman’s left side, careful to avoid the basket that covered the stinking injury.

Soaking the cloth in the bowl of water, which Saita had balanced in her lap, she then wrung it out and wiped the sweat up before soaking the cloth once more. Wringing it out another time, she placed it on Kay’s forehead. She was somewhat surprised to hear a soft sigh, and then Kay fell silent, and before long, her breathing deepened. It would seem that she was finally sleeping or had lapsed into unconsciousness.

“Everyone says I don’t know what you have been through. I think it’s time I change that.” Whispered the old queen as she placed her left hand against the right side of the slumbering woman’s head.

What is Saita about to learn? Way too many things she was never supposed to know. Please stay tuned!
