Implicit motivation has been making psychologists scratch their chins for decades, but it can always be cultivated if you have right motivation.
Are you willing to put a rubber band around your wrist that will absolutely sting you, if you snap it hard enough? This is a weird trick and does require a move towards implicit motivation...as well as a willingness to cause a small amount of physical pain to yourself.
One way to condition the mind for implicit motivation that I found helpful, has 3 steps:
1 Be willing to wear a rubber band around your wrist for a good while; maybe 6 months to a year.
2 Make a ceremony and commitment about putting this rubber band around your wrist (make it fun - change the color every day, whatever works for you to keep the commitment). In that ceremony commit to yourself that when you snap that rubber band, you will re-capture your attention and re-direct it to what you intend....this is also meditation (concentration meditation). Renew this commitment, every morning.
3 When you wake up, decide to yourself what you will train your mind on using the rubber band. Say it's meditation. Then, decide that when you snap the rubber band...it's your bell, it's an indication to meditate, right now, no matter what. Your mind will absolutely fight you on this. DO NOT ALLOW IT TO WIN . Fall back on the commitment you made this morning to trust the rubber band. You can do this with any intention.
