I slowly turned to rest on the left part of my body as the novel at hand was getting more enthralling. My eyes widened as I read the next sentence.
"No way! I didn't see that coming" I mumbled in excitement. I turned again, with my back on the comfy couch and my face towards the ceiling. This book was the absolute best and I wondered why I hadn't consumed its content before now.
My peace and quiet was interrupted by the loud sound of my phone ringing. I picked up the mobile device to see who was on the line
"Linda". I wheezed, dropping the phone back immediately on the table.
Linda was always calling and that too, for very unreasonable conversations.
Thirty minutes ago, she called me to ask what colour she should paint on her toes. An hour earlier, she called to tell me about her neighbour's dog defecating in her front yard again. Very unreasonable things. I know she's my best friend but really?
I laid back in the same position and picked up my book once again. Five hundred pages down, four hundred to go. I grinned like a kid who just got a popsicle.
Again, the phone rang, ending my moment before it even began.
Why was Lina calling so incessantly? She never called more than twice and now she was about to blow up my phone. Upset, I clicked on the 'answer' option.
"Yes?" I asked. I was agitated at this point
"Are you ignoring me now?" Linda asked.
"What do you mean by that? We spoke thirty minutes ago Linda"
"I know I know but… whatever. Switch on your television now. Check the news and see what's going on"
"You know I'm trying to reduce the amount of blue light I encounter. Why not just tell me what's up?".
"Nah. I want you to hear and see for yourself. Your government is at it again."
"Fine". Sluggishly, I picked up the remote control and switched on the television. The newscaster seemed to be doing her job perfectly. The country wasn't at war. No buildings were burning down. Then why did Linda ca…
The headlines.
I read it softly in my head before I burst into laughter.
"A cartel has accidentally shipped out thousands of packages of drugs disguised as coffee bags, and they’ve been popping up all over the country? Return the package to the nearest police station if found?" I read out loud.
"Girl, these people are just bluffing."I finally said
"Exactly what I thought too. They can't be serious. Of all things, coffee bags? That's just insane"
"It's probably another scheme to introduce a brand of coffee. These people should be straightforward sometimes"
"Show me a country with straightforward leaders and I'd show your a snail with the speed of a Tesla" I scoffed
"That aside Joanna, why didn't you pick up the first six times I called?".
"You know what Linda, just hold on to that thought. I'd call you right back" . I said as I immediately ended the call. She was probably going to call back in the next thirty minutes so I didn't feel any remorse.
Linda had totally spoilt my romance novel moment. I stood up and trudged to the kitchen to fix myself a cup of coffee. That could help to get me back in the mood.
I opened my cupboard and I immediately remembered that I used the last coffee. It's a good thing that Daniel, the fiance, had sent over some groceries.
I started unpacking the grocery bag and as expected, there was a packet of coffee. Bliss.

I switched on the hot water heater in preparation for the cup of happiness I was about to devour. I tore open the packet of coffee and there was something white in the packet instead of the regular brown.
For clarification, I reread the name of the company. It was the regular brand, so what was this?..
The just concluded conversation with Linda hit me almost immediately.
"Could it be true? Was this one of the packets of the drugs?" I dipped my pinky finger into the powder and tasted it.
This tasted so much like drugs. I know this because peer pressure made me do drugs in college. I switched off the sizzling hot water and ran to grab my phone. I dialled Linda's line immediately.
"Hello, Linda," I said with obvious anxiety in my tone.
"Well, you really kept to your words. You called back".
"The news was genuine. I just opened a packet of coffee powder and it wasn't coffee powder in there" I babbled.
"Okay. Slow down. What do you mean it wasn't coffee powder?"
"I've taken coffee all my life. I'm too much of a staunch coffee lover not to be able to tell the difference between coffee and possibly cocaine."
"So what do you want to do?"
"That's why I called. You're always the one with the genius ideas. You tell me."
"Flush it down the toilet then" Linda said lightly
"Wh..why? Don't you think I should report to the police station?"
"And stand a chance of getting entangled in a drug cartel–police mess? Absolutely not."
"You're right. Flushing it down the toilet seems more logical" I said. My nerves began to relax. "Thank you but I've got to go now".
I ended the call and took a deep breath. I guess Linda wasn't the only one who called for illogical reasons as common sense should have led me to flush the drugs.
I walked back into the kitchen, picked up the alleged bag of coffee and headed straight for the toilet. Slowly, I emptied the content into the toilet and watched as it dissolved in water.
After the little ritual, I walked back to the parlour. I had no coffee and my moment was gone. However, I couldn't wait to tell Daniel all about the drugs once he returned.
