The older I get, the more I realize that most people would rather you lie to them sometimes than tell them the truth. And the reason for this is that the truth can hurt deeply sometimes, while a lie, in some cases could be seen a you being considerate of the other person's feelings.
The other day, a lady friend of mine had told me about how her one week relationship had ended, and the reason for it, according to her, was because she was too honest.
Apparently, it turned out during one evening, while she was on the phone with her boyfriend, the call had ended abruptly, right in the middle of their conversation and she could tell he had ran out of airtime. Unfortunately she didn't have any airtime herself to call him back, so she decided to wait to see if he would call back.
While she was waiting, her phone had rang and it was a male friend of hers calling. So she picked up the call and they ended up talking for about an hour, by the time she was done with that call, she was already feeling sleepy, so she had texted her boyfriend to tell him goodnight before going to bed.
The next day, her boyfriend had confronted about the whole situation because apparently, he had tried calling her back later that night and the calls never went through. So she decided to tell him the truth, she told him that a friend of hers had called and they had spoken for a while on the phone.
That simple honestly, ended up pissing off the boyfriend, who ended up going five days without calling or talking to her, even after she had apologised for the entire thing. When he eventually came around, it was too late, she was done with the relationship and told him she was no longer interested.
When she told me that story, I ciuodbt help but think that if only she had decided to lie instead (which she didn't have to) and said she was on the call with her mom, then he wouldn't have gotten that pissed off, because he clearly was upset that she had stayed that long on a call with another man.
But does that justify lying, of course not. Telling the truth is always the right thing to do, but is it the best thing?
