The question that serves as the title of this publication arose some years ago in a conversation with friends. Most of them were talking about a very beautiful beach they had visited and wanted to repeat the experience, but to get there they had to travel a road in terrible conditions. Therefore, some said that the beach was the best, the best, the problem was the journey. In other words, they liked the beach but not the road. Of course, that is not bad, but taking that fact as a reference, I want to share with you this reflection: Some people like to enjoy the good things in life, but they do not like the effort required to obtain them. Below we are going to highlight 3 points.
It is vital that in our lives we are clear about the things that are really important. If not, we could be making great efforts to achieve goals that have no value, or that could even harm us. Going back to the question at the beginning, it would be as if, in addition to the difficult road to be traveled, the paya were infected. A useless effort.
Among these things for which making a very great effort or sacrifice is not worth it, we find money and fame.
The money
But money is very useful and necessary, some might say. And the truth is that, to a certain extent, they are absolutely right. If we do not have money we could hardly buy really necessary things, such as clothes, food, etc.. It is even very useful for, from time to time, giving us a well-deserved vacation. Where is the problem then?
The bad thing about money, or the pursuit of it, is that it can lead us to lose sight of the things that really matter. It is very sad to see how some people dedicate their whole lives to getting money in large amounts, but sacrificing their family, their physical well-being, among other things.
The effort they make is completely in vain, and they may not even get to enjoy their money to the fullest. I remember a phrase, of which I do not know the author, but which reflects very well the point I want to convey: "there are people so poor, that the only thing they have is money". What a paradox!
The fame
And what can we say about fame? Is it wrong to want to be known by many people? How negative is it to have our opinion heard and taken into account by others? As with money, it has its positive side, we cannot deny it. What's more, the idea of enjoying that feeling, at least for a while, has crossed many of our minds. Where's the problem then?
Unfortunately, many people sacrifice their time, their health and even their values and moral principles in order to obtain the fame they desire. In this age where technology has advanced so much, it is common to see how some people, in their quest for a like, hearts or the like, post fake news, knowingly or not, promote controversial ideas, whether they agree with them or not, and even worse. The pursuit of fame negatively affects their lives.
And the worst thing is that, just as fame comes, it can also be lost. What is fashionable today may not be tomorrow. It is a constant search, which requires continuous effort.
Of course, having money or being famous does not always have to be a negative thing. The problem arises when we focus so much on obtaining these things, when we put all our efforts into achieving them, that we neglect what is really important. Our health, our friendships or our family.
There are many people who, due to this situation, together with other experiences, end up depressed and empty. Sadly, their efforts were not worth it. In short, these things can produce some satisfaction, but only temporarily.
Risk of not making an effort
We come to the second point. Someone might think: "since the pursuit of money or fame can be negative for me, I'd better not make any effort at all and thus avoid all these problems". But not making an effort in life would also be a serious mistake. Let's see why.
If we do not strive for anything, we cannot be of any use to anyone, not even to ourselves. For example, if we do not make an effort to study and get good grades, we will not be able to get jobs where we can develop our skills or have an income that will allow us to cover our basic needs. It is true that this is not an absolute guarantee, but it does have an influence.
Let's look at another example. If we do not strive to cultivate good qualities that allow us to be better people, we will hardly be able to keep a job, friendships, family, etc. So the idea of just doing things as they come, without striving to do them well, is not good either.
In fact, those who think this way can end up making very bad decisions, because they get used to taking the easy way out. That is what has led many to waste their lives.
Let's now talk about 3 things worth investing our time, energies and resources in: family, friends and personal growth. All of these are interrelated.
The family is not chosen by us, but if we could, because of our way of being, make it closer and more united, or on the contrary, we could end up being simple acquaintances. It is true that sometimes it does not depend entirely on us, but it is always possible to do our part.
Something similar happens with friends. We can initiate excellent friendships, but if we do not make an effort to continue cultivating the friendship, and strengthening it, then we could easily fall into a routine and eventually lose the friends.
Both in the family and with friends it is essential that we devote time to them, that we are with them in good times and, above all, in bad times. It is true that this requires effort on our part, especially if we already have a busy life, but the satisfaction of enjoying their company makes it worthwhile.
Our personal growth has a lot to do with how we relate to others, especially those we trust, such as our family and friends. Our personality is not perfect, so there will always be things to improve on and that will require effort on our part, especially if we have deep-rooted habits.
It may be that, with very good intentions, our relatives, friends or any other person, point out to us some point of our personality in which we should improve. What shall we do? The ideal would be to make the greatest possible effort to improve. This requires humility, but it is an effort that has many rewards. Our personal growth includes satisfying the spiritual part of us, which translates into happiness and satisfaction.
On the one hand, it will make us better people and, on the other hand, it can help us keep our family and friends. We may even find other friends, thanks to our willingness to accept advice and change any negative points we may have. Sure, we can't please everyone, but it is always possible to be better people.
Going back to the example at the beginning, it will always be worth our while to make an effort, even if the path is not the most pleasant or comfortable. If we do, we can enjoy the benefits, which may even be much better than a beautiful beach.
To enjoy the good things in life, you have to make an effort. Do you want good friends, a happy family, respect from others, to grow and improve as a person? Then it is vital that you focus your efforts on improving your personality, increasing your qualities and being a true friend.
These are just 3 aspects in which our efforts, focused on the things that really deserve it, produce great and valuable rewards, especially the real and unique feeling of satisfaction in life. Can you mention in which other things it is a good idea to focus our efforts?
