Heroes in the rubble

Before starting his journey, he put on his dark glasses and began his walk to the east of the city.
The route to follow was a sea of rubble and debris. Everything was ruins in a panorama that exhibited the remains of those buildings that had died standing, showing the wounds of the disaster and refusing to fall before the destruction. In every direction he looked, he saw concrete debris, pieces of metal and pieces of objects that were once part of everyday life.

The Halloween Challenge

«No, no, no. Muchas gracias señora Dorothy.
«Hace mucho tiempo no recibo visitas. La gente inventa muchos cuentos sobre mí, que como niños, que soy una bruja, el mismo demonio dicen que soy. Jaja».
«Yo, yo. No he escuchado nada». Jimmy temblaba tomando el té.

Who will harvest the lemons?

Marcela gasped. In her hand was the shortest stick.
"I can't go? I don't know the place? and it's already getting dark."
"Don't be afraid, Marcela, the plants are next to here, near the path where they came". Rodrigo, the eldest son, tried to calm her down.
"Yes, calm down, my friend, just look for the lemons and come on. Nothing is going to happen to you".

Toiling Under the Sun: A Morning in the Market

Mama sighed but nodded negatively shortly after, begging me to buy from her as she couldn't sell below the price. She said I was the first customer that had come around (rule no 1: don’t listen to them when they say this. Most of them are lying. lol)
"No Mama, that’s what I have on me. Would you sell for me or not?" I replied firmly but politely and was ready to move away.
"Okay, omo mi, mu owo wa (my child, bring the money)," she said reluctantly.

Les Autres

I realized, later, about rashes from unwashed breakfast spoons. If I'd known, I might've avoided. But caught in the moment, I was busy opening and slamming the fridge door, unwrapping each parcel of Gouda and Edam individually. Counting the omelettes you'd never eat, and positioning them strategically in abandoned corners of each room, where harried eyes wouldn't spot them. Too long, you'd reminded me not to feed the mice, or we'd be out on our ears. And it was so very difficult to find rooms, already.

The Straw Game Fiasco

Father Joseph picked up the sack. Inside was an empty wine bottle, and also a full bottle labeled Concord Grape Juice. The man carefully poured the grape juice into the wine bottle, and worked the cork into the top. "My proposal is this: you leave with this bottle, and promise never to break and enter anywhere, as long as you live. I don't expect you to start acting like a saint or anything, just no more breaking the law."
Wes nodded, speechless.

Trying To Make Ends Meet

He built a goat pen in the backyard using broken planks, rusted zinc, and old crates from Mr. Lawal's beer parlor. The whole thing leaned like a drunk uncle at a wedding.
"They just need shelter," he insisted as if he were arguing with someone behind him. "Not Buckingham Palace." he muttered, looking around until our eyes met. I immediately removed my gaze, pretending I was clearing the cobwebs around our door post.
