In my life I have been called lukewarm several times when it comes to criticizing movies, this because some people are very used to always having bad reviews. I understand, it's something that sometimes can be entertaining, but the truth is I prefer not to talk about a movie if I didn't like it, because it feels like a waste of energy, however, every now and then I see a movie that not only I don't like but also, it disappoints me, which makes that I can't keep quiet about the movie and I have to talk even a little bit about it. This month this movie has been the monkey, and although I have read some people say that it is an interesting movie, today I am going to talk about why I think it is a bad movie.

En mi vida me han dicho varias veces tibio en cuestión de criticar películas, esto porque algunas personas están muy acostumbradas a siempre tener malas críticas. Lo comprendo, es algo que a veces puede ser entretenido, pero la verdad yo prefiero no hablar de una película si esta no me gustó, ya que se siente como una pérdida de energía, sin embargo, cada cierto tiempo veo una película que no solo no me gusta, sino que además, me decepciona, lo que hace que no pueda quedarme callado sobre la película y tenga que hablar aunque sea un poco de ella. Este mes esta película ha sido el mono, y aunque he leído a algunas personas decir que es una película interesante, hoy voy a hablar de porque me parece una mala película.

First I have to make a call here, because it's true that I do think it's a bad movie, but as I said, to talk about a movie I don't like, I not only have to think it's bad, but I also have to be disappointed. I was commenting with a friend about the movie and he asked me what I expected from a movie about a killer monkey toy, and I told him that my expectations were really high for several reasons; it is based on a story by a very funny writer, Stephen King, it is directed by the same person who made Longlegs, it is produced by James Wan, and, besides, it is a black comedy. These characteristics made me want to see Monkey as soon as it came out in theaters, since I had also read that it was a kind of Final Destination but a bit more comical, which I found interesting and also funny, like those movies that don't take themselves seriously and therefore end up being very satisfying.

Primero tengo que hacer un llamado aquí, porque es verdad que si me parece una mala película, pero como he dicho, para hablar de una película que no me guste no solo me tiene que parecer mala, sino que también me tiene que decepcionar. Estaba comentando con un amigo acerca de la película y este me preguntó que esperaba de una película sobre un juguete mono asesino, y le dije que realmente mis expectativas eran altas por varias razonas; está basada en una historia de un escritor muy divertido, Stephen King, está dirigida por la misma persona que hizo Longlegs, está producida por James Wan, y, además, es comedia negra. Estas características me hicieron querer ver el mono apenas salió en cines, ya que también había leído que era una especie de destino final, pero un poco más cómica, lo que me pareció interesante y además divertido, como esas películas que no se toman en serio y por ende terminan siendo muy satisfactorias.

However, to be completely honest, the film never really feels like a mockery of itself, but more like something poorly written that is silly and pointless. The characters are awful and the story, which could have been something very interesting to watch, ends up being awful and almost unbearable, with very forced and also very specific humor that may appeal to a certain number of people but overall doesn't work very well. And I understand that humor, as well as tastes, are subjective things for the most part, but being in an almost full room, I can say that none of the people were moved by the jokes, but they were moved by other things.

Sin embargo, siendo completamente sinceros, la película nunca llega a sentirse como una burla a sí misma, sino más bien como algo mal escrito que es tonto y sin sentido. Los personajes son horribles y la historia, que pudo haber sigo algo muy interesante de ver, termina siendo horrible y casi insoportable, con un humor muy forzado y además muy específico que tal vez le guste a cierta cantidad de gente, pero que en general no funciona mucho. Y comprendo que el humor, al igual que los gustos, son cosas subjetivas en su mayoría, pero estando en una sala casi llena, puedo decir que ninguna de las personas se movió con los chistes, pero sí lo hizo con otras cosas.

The deaths in this film are very funny, and I think I was expecting to see a lot of that in the film. Perkins' direction works perfectly and there are beautiful shots in both direction and cinematography, which I found both surprising and unnecessary, and how far-fetched and over-the-top the deaths were also struck me as something worthwhile, but that was only for a few scenes, so overall the film doesn't strike me as good. However, I'm sure it will eventually get its audience.

Las muertes en esta película sí son muy divertidas, y la verdad creo que estaba esperando ver mucho de eso en la película. La dirección de Perkins funciona perfecto y hay planos hermosos tanto en dirección como en fotografía, lo que me pareció tan sorprendente como innecesario, y lo rebuscadas y exageradas que eran las muertes también me parecieron algo que valía la pena, pero eso solo fue por unas cuantas escenas, por lo que en general la película no me parece buena. Sin embargo, estoy seguro de que con el tiempo conseguirá su público.
