I love to exercise, but from home, the subject of gyms does not call me much attention. Paying a monthly membership to use the machines makes me feel a kind of burdensome commitment that doesn't go hand in hand with the natural enjoyment I feel when I move, lift weights and when I exercise in general🙈. I know that for many people the gym works for many people and I also know that the results with exercising at home are often limited but I believe that more than doing a specific type of exercise or in a specific place, it's about training whenever we can, with rest intervals, because that translates into physical and mental health....
At home we have key pieces of a gym: dumbbells up to 15 kg, a jump rope (this is my favorite cardiovascular exercise), parallel bars and recently we bought a spinning machine to vary a bit the cardiovascular exercise. In Bogota the weather is mostly cold and rainy, and although from time to time we go out to train in a park with different strength machines that we have near home, the truth is that because of the jobs we have, the free time and the weather, we are doing perfect training from home.
The last purchase we made for our home gym were some ankle braces up to 3 pounds each that can also be used on the arms. I had seen exercises on Instagram with these types of weights, to work different lower body muscles, so I was encouraged to go all the way to a gym equipment store to buy my own. We saw dumbbells of all types, sizes and prices. Of the model I wanted there were some that were heavier, but I specified to the person who was assisting me that I also wanted one that I could use on my wrists, and he told me that the maximum was 3 pounds, because otherwise they would fall off my arms because of the size that implied a greater weight. I bought the ones he recommended, for a little over $10.
I have used them for leg, calf and glute exercises and have really liked them, they have a good weight to me. I have also incorporated them into my daily walks to walk my dogs and it has been amazing 😍, I come home with legs a little sore but well exercised.
I recently learned that the calves are the muscle that has the lowest glycogen reserves, so every time we exercise it, this muscle must seek these reserves from other parts of the body, which means a continuous use of the fuel that we enter our body. In other words, exercising this muscle in particular helps us to maintain a healthy weight. I find that I can exercise them by putting on these weighted ankle braces and standing on my tiptoes while doing activities that involve standing (like washing dishes).
The truth is that not every day we have 1 hour to dedicate to exercise but we can take advantage of exercising in some routine activities of our day to day. I wanted to share this fact with you to remind you that anyone can stay active, at any time of the day and that we don't need "an athlete's body" to train and be healthy :) Exercise is life 😊
