For Laura, the arrival of the vacations meant only one thing... A new summer at Camp Heavenly, but even her three years as a leader wouldn't prepare her for what she would have to face in this new holiday season.
The organization of the cabins was in the expert hands of Margaret who as she did every year was about to announce to the campers who their guides would be and which cabin they belonged to.
In front of her stood the six girls in charge of leading each of the groups, attentive to the announcement of the tiny blonde with a squeaky voice who served as coordinator of Camp Heavenly.
Each cabin was named after one of the colors of the rainbow and knowing Margaret, the girls knew she would start with the first color, taking all the excitement out of the process.
Indeed, one by one they were called until finally it was Laura's turn and she was assigned to cabin number five, known by all as the Blue Cabin, the fifth color of the rainbow.
Finally it was Sabrina's turn, who was obviously assigned to the Purple Cabin.
Each group, apart from its leader, consisted of two guides and ten campers who for a week were about to live an adventure in contact with nature, away from technology and the comforts associated with life in the metropolis.
Already located in their cabin, Laura was able to discover some familiar faces from previous seasons and after the corresponding introductions and cabin rules the campers proceeded to identify themselves.
Among the ten girls there was one that caught Laura's attention from the first moment, not because she was someone new, but because Alejandra's change was completely abysmal. It even took her a few minutes to realize that it was the same girl.
There was nothing left of the always smiling and sweet Alejandra. In front of her was a girl with a somber look and deep dark circles under her eyes that Laura did not remember having seen on her face before.
Her long black hair had been cut at the base of her neck, almost completely hidden under the black cap that showed some of her locks.
The black jean, about two sizes too big for him, hung a little below his waist, held tightly by a black belt inlaid with small metal daggers. Black boots and top of the same color exposed the small shiny piercing hanging from her navel.
Her former classmates looked at her as if they were watching a circus freak, wondering what could have happened in Alejandra's life to justify such a radical change.
A few hours later, Laura found out that Alejandra's parents had died in a terrible fire, leaving her in the care of her paternal grandmother, the only relative of the girl.
The sad revelation, although it took Laura by surprise, brought her closer to the answer she was looking for. Now she could understand what had made such a sweet girl change to the point of being almost unrecognizable, so she set out to make those seven days as pleasant as possible for Alejandra, but her plans were about to be completely ruined.
The campers immediately showed their rejection to Alejandra's presence among them, mostly out of fear thanks to her rather intimidating appearance, and on the other hand, the girl herself seemed to prefer solitude to the company of her companions.
She participated in the activities and all the planning that the camp had for them but she was far from enjoying it and although her body was there it was obvious that her mind was somewhere else.
As soon as she finished any activity she went to some lonely corner and after some rejections the girls stopped trying to approach her, a situation that worsened after two days when an unpleasant surprise reinforced her fear of rejection.
That night after the campfire the scream of one of the guides made them stop instantly. Only Laura decided to make her way through the shocked girls to find a completely disturbing sight.
In the hallway with its entrails out was a small squirrel and written in blood were the words "next time it won't be a squirrel ".
Laura immediately pulled the girls away before they could read the terrible threat and led them into the dining room while they removed the body of the squirrel and tried to remove the blood stain on the wooden floor.
"Who did this? " asked Laura in a calm voice.
Silence filled the room.
The girls remained silent while Laura examined their faces trying to discover some clue that would lead her to the culprit of such an atrocity, but she couldn't find anything that would give away the culprit.
They were all dismayed by what had happened, except Alejandra who, with her eyes fixed on her but not really looking at her, remained standing in a corner of the dining room leaning against the wall without any expression on her face.
Minutes later the rest of the leaders and their campers entered the dining room while Margaret went to the group looking for answers and in view of not finding them she decided to suspend the remaining campfires until someone took responsibility for what had happened.
That night at the Blue Cabin you could hear a pin drop. The boisterous pre-bedtime girl talk was replaced by a terrified silence. Had any of them been capable of committing such a heinous act?
And if so, who had done it? These were the questions that haunted everyone's mind.
The next morning the squirrel incident was the topic of conversation at Camp. Many theories surfaced with the sinister orphan from the blue hut as the main protagonist.
Angelina, one of the new girls dared to talk directly to Margaret to tell her her theory, which of course pointed to Alejandra.
For her, the girl had taken advantage of her moments of solitude to perpetrate this macabre plan in order to terrorize them.
"It is enough to look at her to realize that only she could come up with something like that", were Angelina's words.
Margaret reassured her that they would soon find the culprit, but for the girls that was not enough. They were completely terrified of the possibility of having a psychopath in the camp and that night when they arrived at their cabins the terror would completely take over the girls of Camp Heavenly.
