Laura could not stand the public glare and insults poured out on her at the city centre. Everyone out there felt she was the culprit. She managed to step aside from the bus but like paparazzis the people kept guessing at her. How can she explain to them that she was innocent of their accusation?
Laura had boarded a bus that morning to work. She was sitting close to the back seat while two men and a young lady like her sat behind her. A middle-aged lady was sitting right in front of Laura. She was having some clean banknotes in her purse which she carelessly slipped into her handbag after paying her fare. The men and the young lady sitting behind Laura saw the money in the purse.
Few minutes later the lady raised an alarm that her purse had gone missing. As the lady turned she saw her purse on the floor of the bus but close to where Laura was sitting. She quickly became mad and angrily accused Laura of stealing her money.
Everyone in the bus started looking towards Laura with some even pouring abuses on her. Laura was confused about the whole thing. She knows within herself that she did not touch the lady's handbag let alone opening her purse and stealing the money therein. The lady maintained that Laura must replace her missing money or else she will involve the police once the bus get to the terminal.
At the terminal Laura alighted and attempted to go her way but was prevented by the lady and other passengers who felt the plight of the lady. They searched Laura's handbag but could not see anything.
As Laura stepped aside after the vigorous search on her, one of the men sitting at the back of the bus then approached her, pointing towards the other lady who was also sitting at the back of the bus with her boyfriend and gently whispered into her ears, "she is the suspect. I saw everything". "Just raise an alarm for her to be searched now that have not moved away. She is a suspect."
At first, Laura was confused. She does not want to accuse someone unjustly and then incur further wrath of the people. The man kept urging her and like a man stung by a bee Laura raised her voice and requested for the lady and her boyfriend to be searched.
At first people did not listen to her but when she insisted the lady whose money was missing and a few others moved in and searched the man. Nothing was found. Then when they wanted to search the lady, her girlfriend, both of them protested but their protest was resisted.
When they lady's handbag was searched behold the missing money was seen. It was wrapped the way the owner had wrapped it.
Laura laughed and tears of joy started flowing down her cheek. The man who had whispered to her gave her a look which literally suggested - I think I told you.
