Hello! Welcome to my blog
I’m greeting you from the Creative Cuisine community to share a recipe using "cabecita negra" (black-headed) beans. I find the name used in Colombia quite curious, though it makes sense given the black spot, whereas in Venezuela, we call them "frijolito de ojo negro" (black-eyed peas).
This is a small, cream-colored bean with a tiny black spot, which is the reason for its name in every country where it is eaten. I think that, aside from being nutritious, the black-eyed pea is a very tender and lovely little bean.
To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of eating beans, I only like a few varieties, specifically lentils, black beans, and split peas, but my children love all kinds of beans. Right now, I’m only with my youngest son, and I cook a lot of legumes for him, so I’ll share other bean-based recipes with you another time.
Let’s get started on preparing black, eyed peas, either as a soup or a stew, which is the most traditional way to cook them. The first step is gathering some natural ingredients and spices to add flavor.

¡Hola! Bienvenidos a mi blog
Ingredients:
- 250 grams of black-eyed peas.
- Bell pepper.
- Onion.
- Garlic.
- Carrot.
- Cilantro.
- 1/4 teaspoon cumin.
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric.
- Salt to taste.

Ingredientes:
250 gramos de frijol cabecita negra.
Pimentón.
Cebolla.
Ajo.
Zanahoria.
Cilantro.
1/4 Cucharadita de comino.
1/4 Cucharadita de cúrcuma.
Sal al gusto.
Preparation:
I put the black-eyed peas in a pot and check to make sure there is no debris mixed in with the beans. I rinse them with water; even though there wasn't any dirt, it is better to wash them. Now, we place the pot on the stove and wait for them to soften.
When they are soft, you have to drain off that first water, something I learned from my mom when cooking certain types of beans so they don't turn out bitter. I learn and I listen. So that’s what I do: I drain them and add fresh water to finish cooking them.
I slice the bell pepper, onion, and carrot into strips. I thinly slice the garlic. When I see the beans starting to soften, I add the chopped vegetables along with the cumin, turmeric, and salt to taste.
I let the vegetables cook, making sure the carrots are tender before adding the chopped cilantro, the final touch that rounds out the flavor of the beans.
I leave them on the heat for a few more minutes and turn off the stove. The black-eyed peas are ready.
These beans, like any others, can be served on their own or accompanied by rice and plantains, arepas, or other side dishes. It’s entirely up to personal preference. I hope you enjoyed this recipe for black-eyed peas as much as my son did. If you aren't familiar with them and happen to be in Venezuela, look for them under the name frijolitos de ojo negro.
Enjoy! 😊
A hug!

¡Buen provecho! 😊
¡Un abrazo!
