"Mum," I remonstrated as she took a handkerchief out of her pocket and spat on it.

"I'm sick of all this remonstrating!" Spittle was now dripping from her chin.

"Remonstrate remonstrate remonstrate!"I taunted her, waving my arms like a whirligig in the air.

"If there's one thing I can count on, it is that you will ever remain sanguine and sesquipedalious.

"Spell sesquipedalious" was my response.

"Could I hear it in a sentence please?"

"Sesquipedalious persons are never the life of the party."

"What would it take for you, Judy, to make you move somewhere? because I have had quite enough of your wordplay. Go play in some other senior citizen's mind. Mine is intact, and I know what you are trying to do. I won't stand for it."

Judy stood in shock. It was the first sentence her mother had ever uttered that wasn't intended to expand her vocabulary. Her mother, in her old age, had gone too far with those qualities necessary for her profession, the writing of dictionaries.

To top things off, a fat tome slammed to the floor, jostling the creaky off-kilter door just enough to let the door drift slowly open. The dog started to whine to go out. Both women ignored him.

So embarrasing.

Judy had had this problem since the way back days of her childhood.

Here she was, a grown woman who knew what sesquipedalious meant, and how to spell it, doing the thing her elderly, but not daft, mother hated second to only one other thing in the world.

Judy peed her pants. The dog did what he always did in these situations. He lifted his leg and added to the puddle, which spread closer and closer to the tome.

There was no time to waste. Judi squish squashed over to the far side of the room and wept over the ancient book that was fast becoming soggy with urine.

"Mum! Your masterpiece!"

"Don't worry dear. That's one fewer things for you to throw away after I'm gone."

This is my entry to mariannewest@mariannewest's daily freewrite challenge. On Saturdays we have a second option of the fabulous Three Part Freewrite: we write for one prompt for five minutes, then move onto the second and third prompts, no peeking ahead. It's always a trip! The prompts are in bold italics in my entry today.

I was pretty sure what sesquipedalious meant as I was writing this, but it kept being underlined as misspelled. After I finished writing I looked it up and found that the word I was looking for is sesquipedalian. I figure I was close enough.
