this is brutal is an interesting prompt for me. I'm in a space that has been particularly difficult the past few months. Most poets find trauma a good time to write, but I have found my voice stilled. I did manage to write one decent poem in response to a @carolkean comment on one of my posts, and it had the word "brutal" in it. I reproduce my poem here, along with a couple other poems I wrote long ago, back during a previous brutal patch of mine. The last poem was published on Hive and its predecessor, link included. So the only part of this post that is a freewrite, is this paragraph. Thank you for reading my poems.
Grief
lost loves
ripped from our sides
ribs torn from our flesh
reborn as memories
brutal
The Champ
I know now how despair comes
It comes on cat feet
and waits on its sleek haunches just outside
You know it's there, intent on coming in
You can feel its pointed whickers poking throught the screen
You hope it will get distracted by a rabbit or two
but
wind whooshes through the screen
and sorrow gallops through you
When you can breathe again,
and you will breathe again,
sharpen all your scissors and all your pencils and
your tongues and your wits
because you'll be needing them
Fugue
When a song ends we can hear the wind
the earth's turning is a comfort
When a voice is stilled
our heart holds a pulsating sound
a purr
This is my entry to @mariannewest's daily freewrite challenge. Today's prompt is this is brutal.
