Good evening, blog friends, here I am again with you to review a book I finished a few days ago (I have the bad habit of reading multiple books at once). This one took me very little time to finish, though. It's a debut novel and also a bit autobiographical by Giorgia Protti, an emergency room and emergency medicine doctor as well as a writer. Her book tells the story of a doctor who works in the emergency room, the most chaotic department in the hospital. It begins with her taking a shift, each shift becoming more and more difficult and the doctor more tired, the extra hours, the staff shortages, the thousands of different cases that come and go in the emergency room, all those patients waiting, all the stress. And the doctor's life is sucked into her department, the emergency room becomes a home, and she and her tired and devastated colleagues wander through this house filled with pain, responsibility, bureaucracy, and gallons of caffeine. However, for some time now our protagonist has begun to notice a figure that seems to follow her, in the dim light, with the appearance of a somewhat alternative boy, sometimes he speaks to her, cheekily, but that boy is not an ordinary person but Lucifer and he takes her with him to dark places or perhaps just into the darkness of her mind.

Este, sin embargo, lo termin茅 en muy poco tiempo. Es la primera novela, tambi茅n un tanto autobiogr谩fica, de Giorgia Protti, m茅dica de urgencias y medicina de emergencia, adem谩s de escritora. Su libro cuenta la historia de una doctora que trabaja en urgencias, el departamento m谩s ca贸tico del hospital. Comienza con su primer turno, cada turno se vuelve m谩s y m谩s dif铆cil y la doctora m谩s cansada, las horas extras, la escasez de personal, los miles de casos diferentes que van y vienen en urgencias, todos esos pacientes esperando, todo el estr茅s. Y la vida de la doctora se absorbe en su departamento, urgencias se convierte en su hogar, y ella y sus colegas cansados y desolados deambulan por esta casa llena de dolor, responsabilidad, burocracia y litros de cafe铆na. Sin embargo, desde hace alg煤n tiempo nuestra protagonista ha comenzado a notar una figura que parece seguirla, en la penumbra, con la apariencia de un chico algo alternativo, a veces le habla, descaradamente, pero ese chico no es una persona com煤n sino Lucifer y la lleva consigo a lugares oscuros o tal vez solo a la oscuridad de su mente.
In an almost dreamlike atmosphere, her encounters with Lucifer intertwine with life in the emergency room and the cases she deals with every day: the woman with cancer who reminds her of her mother, the relapsed alcoholic left alone to face her demons, the man who treats her so well despite being dying, rapid diagnoses, fleeting conversations, stress, difficult colleagues, and hospital shortages. And in the middle of it all, she sees a demon and whose private life is falling apart, if she ever truly had a private life outside the emergency room. A very interesting book that beautifully describes the difficulties of Italian hospitals and the frenetic and stressful lives of the few who work there, as well as the difficult relationships with patients. It invites reflection on many points, and then there's that little hint of the supernatural with the presence of Lucifer. A beautiful debut novel; having worked for a time in a hospital as a nursing assistant, I really identified with it.
En una atm贸sfera casi on铆rica, sus encuentros con Lucifer se entrelazan con la vida en urgencias y los casos que atiende a diario: la mujer con c谩ncer que le recuerda a su madre, la alcoh贸lica reca铆da que se enfrenta sola a sus demonios, el hombre que la trata tan bien a pesar de estar muriendo, diagn贸sticos r谩pidos, conversaciones fugaces, estr茅s, compa帽eros dif铆ciles y escasez de personal en el hospital. Y en medio de todo esto, ve a un demonio y su vida privada se desmorona, si es que alguna vez la tuvo fuera de urgencias. Un libro muy interesante que describe con belleza las dificultades de los hospitales italianos y la vida fren茅tica y estresante de quienes trabajan all铆, as铆 como las dif铆ciles relaciones con los pacientes. Invita a la reflexi贸n sobre muchos aspectos, y luego est谩 ese peque帽o toque de lo sobrenatural con la presencia de Lucifer. Una hermosa novela debut; habiendo trabajado un tiempo en un hospital como auxiliar de enfermer铆a, me sent铆 muy identificada.
