When Han Kang was announced as the 2024 Nobel Prize winner, I felt that almost childish urgency to get everything she had written and then I devoured The Vegetarian, trembled with Human Acts, let myself be dragged by the white crack of The White Book, and now, months later, it is precisely that small, almost silent book that won't let me go.

The White Book is not a conventional novel, but rather a hybrid object with 65 fragments that flicker between memory, poetry, essay and prayer. Its substance is whiteness and its engine is the absence of the older sister who died two hours after being born, before Han Kang existed. The narrator walks through a European city, Warsaw, and in that foreign pallor she finds the altar to mourn a girl she never knew. Is there any greater poetry?

And I, who thought poetry lived in verse, discovered that here it lives in every pause, in every white space between paragraph and silence. It is a book to be read with the fingers, as if the pages were made of rice paper, while Han Kang manages to make the fragile the most solid thing in the world and shows that white is not the absence of color, but rather the color of childbirth, of the shroud, of spilled milk, and that certainty split me in two.

alt

I have cried with her other books, but here the tears are not for violence or collective history; they are for something more intimate: compassion for what never came to be. The narrator writes for a ghost sister and invents a life for the one who had no name. "If you had lived, I would not exist," she says, and that shiver haunted me for days.

That is why The White Book captivated me more than any other, because while The Vegetarian is a scream and Human Acts an open wound, this book is a sigh. I recommend it to anyone looking for a brief but infinite read, to anyone who believes that poetry can fit inside a snowflake, and to anyone who wants to understand why Han Kang's Nobel Prize is also a prize for delicacy.

โ€œSi hubieras vivido, yo no existirรญaโ€, dice y ese escalofrรญo me persiguiรณ dรญas enteros.

alt

alt
