I am used to Isabel Allende's love and to those passions that envelop me from The House of the Spirits, loaded with magic and destiny, to those female characters who keep burning even when history drags them along. So when I opened The Infinite Plan, I did it with a prejudice, and I do not deny it.

What I found was a man, throughout an entire book, searching for himself without finding himself, and that is why later, when I researched, I learned that it is Allende's first novel starring a man and also the first set entirely in the United States. Gregory Reeves is a gringo, a white boy who grows up stumbling in a Latino neighborhood of Los Angeles. He does not belong anywhere because he is not "American" enough to integrate into the mainstream, nor "Latino" enough for that community to fully adopt him. That suspension is the air that breathes through the entire book, and it is what captivated me the most.

I confess that the first pages were difficult for me because that feminine delicacy that I recognize as hers was not there. Here Allende does something else, she uses the entire life of a man to measure half a century of the United States. From the forties, when the father travels the West preaching from a rundown truck, to the political fervor of Berkeley in the sixties, the blood and disillusionment of Vietnam, and then the material fever of the eighties and its spiritual hangover. Gregory is a leaf dragged by his era: every time he believes he has grasped something, the next thing scatters it.

I remember Charles Reeves, the father, that street preacher who spoke of the "infinite plan" and who said that there was a divine wisdom in the universe and that everything had its place and its reason. That statement becomes for Gregory an obsession from which he cannot escape, so he spends the entire book searching for that "plan," and he searches for it in women, in alcohol, in the adrenaline of war, and even in the files of a law firm.

Allende said in an interview that the character of Gregory was inspired by Willie, her second husband, who was a man with a wandering childhood, later a lawyer, and with an addicted daughter. That explained to me why the book reads with an almost biographical patience and with a certain tender distance. She does not judge him, even though Gregory has a thousand irritating things, such as being selfish and a disaster in love. In the end, she writes him like someone organizing the memories of a person they love.

The structure itself is interesting because the entire novel is framed by Gregory telling his life to a woman, and only at the end do we discover that this listener is Allende herself. In the closing, he tells her: you made me plant the rose in firm ground. It turns out that this entire book, through the entire life of this man, is a confession.

I do not know if it is her best novel, but it is one of her most honest works. She does not hide behind the magical veil to beautify desire; instead, she writes about how an ordinary man clumsily survives in the cracks of his time and how the theme she pursues in all her books germinates slowly and with difficulty in a single man.

In the end, I had the certainty that it is still a love novel, only here love is no longer the wild and fatal passion that I knew, but what remains when someone can finally look at another person and say, I am ready. Gregory's infinite plan was to be able to stop.

Asรญ que cuando abrรญ
