As I mentioned earlier, I had certain expectations for this story. I find the premise extremely interesting, the idea that a painting reflects our “soul” is incredibly original, especially for the time it was written. That said, I have to admit that at times I lost focus on the main plot because of the author’s lengthy descriptions, especially in a certain chapter (if you’ve already read it, I’m sure you know exactly which one I’m referring to). While they helped me visualize the scene, all that description ended up pulling me out of the story.
Como ya les mencioné, tenía cierto grado de expectativa con esta historia. La premisa me parece sumamente interesante, la idea de que una pintura refleje nuestra "alma" es súper original, especialmente para la época en que fue escrito. Dicho esto, confieso que por momentos me desconcentraba de la trama principal debido a las largas descripciones que hacía el autor, sobre todo en cierto capítulo (si ya lo leyeron, seguro saben exactamente a cuál me refiero). Más allá de ayudarme a visualizar la escena, tanta descripción terminaba sacándome de la historia.
Although our protagonist is Dorian Gray, honestly it was Basil and Lord Henry who captivated me from the start; it was like watching two opposites clash over a common point, which in this case was Dorian. It was fascinating to see how, through their dialogues, they explored what is right and what is wrong, what is moral and what is inmoral, but above all, the value placed on beauty, youth, the ego, and the fear of aging. All of this is closely tied to social pressures, something that remains relevant even today.
Aunque nuestro protagonista es Dorian Gray, honestamente fueron Basil y Lord Henry quienes me atraparon desde el inicio; era como ver dos opuestos enfrentados ante un punto en común, que en este caso era Dorian. Resultaba muy interesante ver cómo, a través de sus diálogos, se planteaba lo que está bien y lo que no, lo moral y lo inmoral, pero sobre todo el valor otorgado a la belleza, la juventud, el ego y el miedo a envejecer. Todo esto muy relacionado con las presiones sociales, algo que sigue vigente en los tiempos actuales.
Dorian is a character I’m not sure I fully understand. At the beginning of the story, he’s very young—more naive than innocent, I’d say—extremely impressionable, and even emotional. As the plot unfolds, we see how he changes and the impact it has on him to see the results of his actions reflected in the painting. Although the book explains what drives him to want to stay young at all costs, I think what I don’t quite grasp are his true motivations. I suppose that’s where the real importance of this book lies—in making you question the value we place on beauty from a superficial perspective, and how this can end up distorting the very essence of what it means to be human.
Dorian es un personaje que no estoy segura de entender por completo. Al comienzo de la historia es muy joven, más ingenuo que inocente, diría yo; sumamente impresionable y hasta emocional. A medida que la trama avanza, vemos cómo va cambiando y el impacto que le produce ver el resultado de sus acciones reflejado en el cuadro. Aunque el libro explica qué lo lleva a desear mantenerse joven a toda costa, creo que lo que no termino de comprender son sus verdaderas motivaciones. Supongo que ahí radica la verdadera importancia de este libro, hacerte cuestionar el valor que le damos a la belleza desde un punto de vista banal, y cómo esto puede llegar a deformar la esencia misma del ser humano.
After finishing the book, I watched the 2009 adaptation, and I think it was the perfect complement. The movie takes the liberty of being much more explicit, confirming several details that are only hinted at in the book.
