There are gifts like the one I received a few days ago that not only find their place immediately but transform the space and the mood. My cousin, who lives in another province, sent us a package. It was not my birthday, nor a marked date on the calendar; it was simply an ordinary day when she decided that my daughter and I needed a little piece of her affection materialized in an object, and she certainly achieved it.
When I opened the box, the first thing that struck me was the color. A soft, delicate pink, but full of life, and when I took it out, my hands held a dreamcatcher that, more than a decorative object, seemed like a small work of art woven with intention. It was not the typical simple dreamcatcher with a single hoop and a few feathers; this one had three hoops, one larger than the other, joined by threads that formed a perfect and symbolic spiderweb, and on that structure, as if they had landed by chance, there were butterflies and flowers. It was simply of a beauty that is not strident, but rather discovered with the gaze, detail by detail.
My daughter was the first to react. Her eyes lit up and, with that brutal honesty that only children have, she declared: "Mom, it is the most beautiful one I have seen in my life." And she was right, not because it was the most expensive or the largest, but because it was charged with a special energy from someone who, hundreds of kilometers away, thought of us and took the time to choose something we would like, something that would suit our sensitivity.
My cousin did not know it, but that day I had had a long day, one of those in which fatigue seeps into your bones and worries circle your head, and seeing that pink dreamcatcher, with its butterflies and flowers, was as if someone opened a window in a closed room and let fresh air in.
We hung it together, my daughter and I. We looked for the perfect place because we wanted it to preside over the room, to be the first thing we saw upon waking and the last thing when going to bed. We hung it near the window, where the morning light passes through it and makes the threads seem to shine.
Since then, our room has a new silent inhabitant that, according to tradition, catches bad dreams and lets only the good ones through. I do not know if I fully believe in that magical function, but what I have no doubt about is that it is already fulfilling another one, which is to remind me every day that we are not alone.
Now, when I look at the dreamcatcher, I no longer see just a pretty ornament but I see my cousin's hands choosing it and her intention to send us something that would unite the two of us, my daughter and me, in the same gesture. I also see, above all, the lesson that true affection does not need grand occasions because it manifests in the small, in the everyday, and in a pink detail with butterflies and flowers that now adorns our room, reminding me that despite the distance, we continue weaving together our own web of affections.
