The story follows Lark, a woman who left her life in Texas to start over in Ireland. Lark applied for a work visa to work at an animation studio in a quiet town in Ireland, where she’ll meet her shy and introverted neighbor, Callum, who runs a funeral home. Lark is struggling a bit with that part of her life; she’s still grieving a loss she finds hard to talk about with others, but she and Callum become friends instantly. Despite their differences—and Callum’s shyness—they manage to be there for each other. But Callum has a problem: he needs to get married within six months. That was his grandfather’s last wish; his grandfather will leave him the funeral home where he lives and works only if he fulfills this part of the will. So Lark helps him find a partner while the attraction between them grows, even though she swore she’d never get married again.

I've wanted to read this book since last year; it was on my to-read list, and I finally decided to read it—it was a great decision. It's one of those stories that strikes just the right balance—the one I look for in a romantic comedy: a balance between humor and romance. It made me laugh a lot and gave me a very sweet love story, and the best part is that the main characters are over 30, so it’s easier for those of us approaching middle age to feel represented.

I highlighted that last point because it’s hard to find main characters who are your age, but when you do find them and the story is a real hit, it’s so much better. So it has that combination that I loved and made me enjoy the book so much. The fact that Cal works at a funeral home and Lark is totally grossed out by the whole death thing really made me laugh—I mean, even their personalities are so different, yet they fit together really well. I liked the chemistry between them and that, despite their attraction—which kept growing stronger—they never lost sight of what they thought was best for their future. That speaks to a certain maturity because, yes, you have to be realistic and realize that no matter how much love there is, sometimes the circumstances aren’t right or the two of you want different things, and you have to accept that. I found that part very human.

Anyway, it has a happy ending, so don't worry. Otherwise, I wouldn't be speaking so highly of the story. By the way, it's told from the perspectives of both characters, which makes it much more complete because you get to know the thoughts of both protagonists. It's easier to empathize with their situations and understand them better. There are other characters in the story that I really liked, and one in particular who really makes you hate him. This kind of character, who adds a touch of evil to the plot, never fails to deliver. He really made himself detestable—I hated him with a passion—and the worst part is that he stayed that way until the very end. There was no redemption for him just for the sake of it; some people just enjoy being mean and evil.

The story is very mature and beautiful; it talks about grief, denial, and learning to forgive oneself. It’s also about not letting the opportunities life gives us slip away, and one thing that makes it special is that the male protagonist is demisexual. I think it’s great that the book addresses this because it’s not a well-known topic and deserves more visibility. Plus, it teaches us some Irish, which is really appreciated. There are a couple of Irish words included with their pronunciation and translation in case you want to learn them too. It’s quite comprehensive in that regard, and I truly feel this book is well worth reading—it has great humor and a romance that, if you enjoy this kind of story, you’ll love.
