I was fifteen, with bruised knees from constantly crossing them in bed as I devoured page after page of Pride and Prejudice, hiding from my mother. She had told me it was just a period novel, but that night I discovered that wasn't true. Here I am, years later, still dreaming of a love that argues, wounds, transforms, and is not easy.

Because what no one tells you about Darcy and Elizabeth is that they don't fall in love despite their flaws, but through them. She is prejudiced, judging him before knowing him, while he is proud, believing his position excuses him from being kind. That first marriage proposal in Hunsford is the cruelest and most honest scene I have ever read.

Jane Austen does not give us a perfect love; she gives us two people who look at each other before the abyss of what they are and decide, slowly, painfully, to change. Darcy leaves Pemberley and learns to treat his servants with respect, while Elizabeth listens, questions herself, cries with shame when reading the letter where he reveals her blindness. Until when they meet again, they are no longer the same. He is humble without losing dignity, and she is passionate without losing judgment.

That ending, on the moors in the rain, with him telling her he still loves her "with the same ardor as at Longbourn"โ€ฆ grips my chest every time.

alt

The most beautiful thing is that Austen wrote this in 1813, when a woman could only aspire to marriage as economic salvation, and yet she dared to build a heroine who says "no" to a rich man twice and demands intellectual respect.

Today, with several heartbreaks behind me, I remain a hopeless romantic, but I don't seek a prince. I seek someone who, like Darcy, is capable of saying "I was wrong" and truly changing, who argues with me with pride but stays when he sees my vulnerability. Someone who looks at me as Darcy looks at Elizabeth in the end: not as a prize, but as an everyday miracle.

That is why Pride and Prejudice is not a romance novel but a manifesto that teaches us that true love is not the one that completes you, but the one that invites you to be more yourself. And so, even though I have memorized every retort of Elizabeth Bennet, I still dream, read, and wait.

If she waited a whole year to see him walk toward her again at Pemberley, I can wait a little longer. I only ask that when he arrives, he not be perfect, only that, like Darcy, he be willing to learn to love me well.

"Orgullo y prejuicio" de mi adolescencia || Reseรฑa

alt

Esa primera propuesta de matrimonio en Hunsford es la escena mรกs cruel y honesta que he leรญdo jamรกs.

alt
