I have previously talked to you about my favorite villains and even my literary crushes, explaining why they rank among my favorites; but today, I wanted to honor three of my favorite literary heroines—who aren’t strictly "heroines" in the traditional sense, yet stand out within the story due to their personalities, versatility, and independence.
Antereiormente ya les he hablado sobre villanos favoritos y hasta Crushes literarios explicándoles mis razones por las cuales están entre mis favoritos, pero el día de hoy quise honrrar a tres de mis heroínas literarias favoritas, que no son propiamente heroínas, pero destacan en la trama por su personalidad, versatilidad e independencia.
Anne de Green Gables
She is an unconventional heroine; she doesn’t fit the mold of the "perfect" protagonist. On the contrary, she constantly makes mistakes because she is quite impulsive—yet she learns from them. She is well ahead of her time and, as is often the case with orphans, remarkably independent. The skills she possesses weren’t simply granted to her for the sake of the plot; rather, they were forged by the very real circumstances that force a child her age to face life without any protection. She is not your typical "pretty girl"—in fact, she has a poor self-image and detests her most striking physical feature: her red hair. She has a deep hatred for injustice and is incredibly passionate; she lets her emotions guide her, experiencing them—even the emotions of others—with great intensity. Furthermore, she loves—or perhaps "adores" is a better word—reading and writing; she even founded a writing club with her friends, which shows she is a natural-born leader. But best of all, she possesses a boundless imagination that reminds me of myself at that age—a dreamer who is constantly inventing stories in her head and casting herself as the lead. How could one not love her?
Ella es una heroína no convencional pues no encaja en el molde de la protagonista perfecta, al contrario, comete errores constantemente porque es bastante impulsiva, pero aprende de ellos, es muy adelantada a su tiempo, bastante independiente como toda niña huérfana, todas sus habilidades las ha adquirido no por conveniencia de la historia, sino por circunstancias muy reales que conyevan a un niño de su edad a enfrentarse a la vida sin proteción alguna. No es la típica chica bonita, al contrario, ella tiene una pobre imagen de si misma y detesta su mayor cualidad física, (su cabello rojo) Odia las injusticias, es muy pasional con sus sentimientos pues se deja llevar por ellos y los vive con intensidad, incluso los agenos, además ama, no, creo que adora es la palabra adecuada, ella adora leer y escribir e incluso hasta fundó un club de escritura con sus amigas, lo cuál demuestra que es una líder innata. Pero lo mejor de todo es que ella tiene una imaginación desbordante que me recuerda a mí misma a su edad, una chica soñadora que no deja de invetar historias en su cabeza y hasta de protagonizarlas a través de su propia imaginación, así que ¿Cómo no amarla?
Hermione Granger (Harry Potter)
She is another unconventional heroine, as her strengths lie neither in physical beauty nor in brute force, but rather in her intellect and capacity for pragmatism. In fact, according to the books, the Sorting Hat nearly placed her in Ravenclaw—the house for brilliant minds. She is exceptionally skilled at research and logic; however, as no one is perfect, she can be quite closed-minded in certain respects—if she hasn’t encountered specific information in a book, she is prone to dismissing the idea entirely. Nevertheless, she possesses a profound sense of loyalty that transcends mere duty. Despite her studious and meticulous nature, she is capable of breaking rules and acting irreverently if the end justifies the means; she is brave in every sense of the word and harbors a deep-seated hatred for injustice. She is far more than just an insufferable "know-it-all"—though that is how she begins her journey in the story—as she eventually evolves into a natural-born leader. Furthermore, she is incredibly noble, often advocating for those who lack a voice or the means to defend themselves—take, for instance, S.P.E.W. (the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare), an organization she founded to help house-elves secure more dignified treatment.
Otra heroína no convencional, pue sus cualidades no están ni en su belleza física ni en la fuerza bruta, sino en su intelecto y en su capacidad para el pragmatismo, de hecho según los libros, el sombrero seleccionador estuvo a punto de enviarla a Ravenclaw (la casa de las mentes brillantes) es especialmente habil para la investigación y la lógica, auqnue, como no todo puede ser perfecto, su mente es muy cerrada en cuanto a algunos aspectos, es decir, si ella no ha visto determinada información en un libro, ella simplemente descartará esa idea, no obstante también tiene un excelente sentido de lealtad que va más alláde su sentido del deber, a pesar de ser tan estudiosa y prolija, es capaz de saltarse las reglas y de ser irreverente si el fin justifica los medios pues es valiente en toda la extensión de la palabra y además odia las injusticias. Ella es más que una sabelotdo insoportable, si bien es así como inicia su personaje en la historia, pero ella evoluciona hasta transformarse en una líder nata. Es además muy noble, hasta el punto pensar en aquellos que no tienen voz o medios para defenderse ¿Cómo olvidar la P.E.D.D.O (Plataforma Elfica de Derechos Obreros) su fundación para ayudar a que los elfos domesticos a tener un trato más digno.
Elizabeth Bennet (Orgullo y prejuicio)
I adore her because she possesses a sharp, keen intellect and is never afraid to speak her mind. With the characteristic respect and elegance that define her, she is perfectly capable of putting people in their place without ever losing her composure. She has an ironic sense of humor and does not allow herself to be swayed by her emotions; instead, thanks to her sharp mind, she carefully assesses the situation. But one of the things I admire most about her is that, despite living in an era that was incredibly difficult for women—a time when they often had to submit to arranged marriages just to be considered "protected" or "part of society"—she prioritized her own dignity. I will never forget the words she spoke to Darcy when he first declared his love for her in such an arrogant manner—to quote directly from the novel *Pride and Prejudice*:
Ella me encanta porque tiene una agudeza mental afilada y no teme decir lo que siente, con todo el respeto y elegancia que la caracteriza es perfectamente capaz de poner a la gente en su lugar sin perder la compostura, tiene un sentido del humor irónico y no se deja llevar por sus sentimientos pues, al tener una mente aguda, analiza muy bien el terreno. This shows that she is loyal to her own people; she is not easily swayed by mere pretty words. She knows how to value her family—who could, at times, be irreverent or even unpleasant—yet they were her family, and she loved them. At the same time, she is self-critical and fully capable of mental and emotional growth, recognizing that Mr. Darcy was raised differently, and that, despite this, he was still able to change his attitude for the sake of love.
