The Edgar Allan Poe story I would like to analyze on this occasion is "The Oval Portrait." It tells the story of a wounded man and his servant who take refuge in a strange, abandoned castle—and I say "strange" because it is certainly not ordinary. There, they discover a peculiar, hyper-realistic oval painting that catches both men's attention; it is the portrait of a very young woman. A book reveals the story behind the portrait: it depicts a young woman whose husband insists on painting her. She poses for weeks in a tower so he can work on the piece, but the man fails to notice what is actually happening; he is so obsessed with perfection and realism that he focuses entirely on his creation—which becomes increasingly lifelike—while his wife’s health steadily declines, until she dies the moment he applies the final brushstroke.
Here we find a clear—albeit obviously exaggerated—example of the harm that obsessions can cause, particularly the obsession with perfection. Artists often concern themselves with achieving the greatest possible realism, forgetting about life itself and the fact that their work—however beautiful—will always be an imitation of life, and that nothing is gained by ignoring it. Obsession distorts and slowly consumes; it destroys you because it makes you feel that nothing is ever enough.
It can also be a metaphor for how art consumes—or rather, absorbs—life, though in this case in the positive sense of the word; each artist pours a part of themselves into their creation, giving it personality and making it more human.
The narrative is peculiar yet highly interesting and unconventional; it is what I would call "fetus in fetu"—though obviously that isn't the proper term, haha—just a way of describing a story told within another story: one narrator recounts the events, and then another explains the history of the portrait, all set against a gloomy, solitary backdrop—much like the settings Edgar Allan Poe accustomed us to.
