Hello, internet folk. How are you all? Today I want to tell you about a rather disturbing short film, but one which, as is often the case, uses metaphors to address or raise issues within society. It’s called *Canis*, a Spanish short film made using stop-motion animation.

Teo is a young man who lives with his father (an elderly man) – or rather, they are just scraping by in what seems like a wasteland where stray dogs rule the roost. When his father has an accident and dies, Teo, who was dependent on his father, has to learn to survive on his own, but it is harder than it seems.

The whole story (without giving anything away) reflects maturity achieved through trauma: a young man who is afraid of everything and feels helpless is forced, out of necessity, to face his fears and embrace his inner beast in order to survive.

In other words, bestiality gradually gains ground as the story unfolds; in fact, there is a girl who wears dog skins and behaves literally like a dog – even walking on all fours – and she is proof of what happens when bestiality fully takes hold of an individual who, in order to survive, lets themselves be carried away until they lose all trace of humanity.

I think stop-motion short films tend to capture my interest more and demonstrate a high level of artistic quality; the character modelling, the textures, the minimalist colour palette – with black and white predominating – and the interplay of light and shadow in each scene turn the short film into pure art.

One of the things I liked most – and still like in general – about these short films is that they tend to have no dialogue and the narrative is purely visual; they tell the story in such a way that you never lose interest, and everything they want to convey is understood without needing to be said.

In conclusion, *Canis* does not offer a lesson or a moral; rather, it simply wants us to visualise how, following the collapse of civilisation, civilisation is lost and bestiality is embraced; the monsters are not defeated – that does not mean victory – but we become part of the monsters in order to hold out hope for tomorrow, for one more day.
