Today, I’d like you to join me for one of the weekly outings I take with my sister. We love spending quality time together and exploring every corner within our reach. Last time, we visited Montalbán—my father’s hometown, where I also spent the first seven or eight years of my childhood. This time, however, I invite you to join us at Cerro El Casupo—a spot that presents a real physical challenge, one that both of us were eager to take on and overcome together. It is a mountain that serves as a "natural lung" for the city of Valencia, Venezuela—a protected area spanning 693 hectares that stretches from Guataparo to La Viña. Although the route is relatively short, it is quite demanding; the mountain is steep and features rocky sections that require significant physical exertion, which is why it is considered to be of moderate difficulty.
On this sign, you can see the full extent of all the trails; we only made it to what is considered the summit of El Casupo hill, and, honestly, the effort was absolutely worth it.
At the start, my sister and I were in great spirits and full of energy; we arrived super early—it wasn’t even seven in the morning yet—but we made our first mistake without even realizing it. We were so excited that we climbed too quickly and forgot to eat breakfast, so we just kept going, fueled entirely by sheer willpower, haha! 😂
The route became increasingly demanding, and that was when we remembered we hadn’t eaten breakfast yet—we’d only had a few sips of coffee before leaving home. We had to push through, taking breaks along the way until we reached the first rest stop where the park rangers are stationed. I was completely exhausted and felt dizzy; my sister seemed okay at first, but then she started feeling dizzy too and even vomited—though she actually felt better afterward. Once we’d rested and managed to steady our breathing and heart rates, we were finally able to have breakfast: some delicious Venezuelan-style pancakes (stuffed with cheese).
And here was a very pleasant surprise—an example that served as motivation for me. Do you see that steep incline? It was the part that nearly finished us off during the first leg of the journey (little did we know that what lay ahead would be even worse!). Of course, it’s worth noting that we hadn’t eaten breakfast—but anyway, what really caught my eye was the woman you can see in the photograph, holding a walking stick. She is 83 years old, yet she arrived looking as fresh as a daisy. She says she completes the entire route without any trouble—all thanks to her consistency. She has been making this trek since she was twenty, which is why she remains so active. I was completely in awe of her attitude and her physical fitness.
So, after a well-deserved rest and a comforting breakfast that gave us plenty of strength—while also imbuing us with the energy of that kind woman—we felt sufficiently refreshed and enthusiastic to continue our trek toward the summit, the highest point of Cerro El Casupo, where our reward would be a 360-degree view of the entire city of Valencia (our city).
And finally, we made it—after a very demanding stretch, especially for those not accustomed to this kind of activity (and considering we aren’t exactly in the best physical shape), we reached the summit. The final part of the ascent becomes rocky, requiring you to use your hands for better traction; there’s slippery red soil, so you have to be extremely careful, but it is truly well worth it. Getting to see your own city from up there is an uplifting experience.
I won't lie, I was very tired, yes, but I also felt enormous satisfaction with myself for having gotten that far. A healthy sense of self-pride washed over me, so I feel that this activity not only helped me strengthen my emotional bond with my little sister but also helped me evaluate my own abilities and reinforce my self-confidence.
After spending some time up there, we decided to retrace our steps—this time heading back down toward our starting point—and finally, feeling quite exhausted, we settled in to enjoy the gift that nature had to offer. We sat on some wooden benches near the stream, where we gazed at the trees, let ourselves be enveloped by their shade, and listened to the songs of the birds. We even spotted some birdhouses that the park rangers had placed there, which filled us with a sense of satisfaction.
