My Miniature Library #10
The King's Perfume, by Karine Bernal Lobo
Hello everyone in this beautiful community, today we continue with a new addition to my Miniature Library. After closing my journey through the Months by Your Side saga, it is time to begin a different story, with new characters, another universe, and a setting that takes us into a world of kings, princes, wars, and secrets.
This time, it is The King's Perfume, by Karine Bernal Lobo, the first book in the King saga. The protagonist is Emily Malhore, the daughter of one of the most renowned perfumer families in the kingdom of Mishnock. Her life revolves around flowers, perfumes, her family, and her friends, until a series of events brings her closer to Prince Stefan and introduces her to a world far more complicated than the one she knew.
What might initially seem like a love story between a young woman and a prince soon begins to reveal other dimensions. Emily becomes involved in matters related to the monarchy, the differences between kingdoms, and a conflict that goes far beyond personal relationships. Suddenly, her life is no longer as peaceful, and she begins facing situations in which her decisions may have consequences she never imagined.
One of the most interesting aspects of this story, in my opinion, is the way romance blends with the struggle for power. In this universe, feelings do not exist in isolation but are surrounded by interests, secrets, and expectations that can influence the characters' decisions. Belonging to a particular family, holding a position in society, or wearing a crown can completely change the way a person relates to others.
Through Emily, we can also reflect on how difficult it can be to preserve our own voice when other people try to make decisions for us. At first, she seems to lead a life quite distant from the kingdom's major conflicts, but circumstances force her to question many things she had taken for granted. Her story raises an important question: to what extent can we choose our own path when much more powerful forces are trying to direct our destiny?
Another theme that stands out is how we form our ideas about other people and those we consider our enemies. Emily has grown up hearing a particular version of the events that have shaped the relationship between Mishnock and Lacrontte. However, as she begins to encounter a more complex reality, some of her certainties start to crumble.
I think this is one of the most interesting questions a story set in rival kingdoms can raise. Many times, the information we receive is influenced by the perspective from which events are told. Learning about another point of view does not necessarily mean that everything we believed was false, but it can force us to ask questions and recognize that a situation may be much more complicated than it initially seemed.
The relationship between Emily and Prince Stefan also allows us to reflect on love and power. In romantic stories, we often encounter characters who must overcome obstacles to be together, but when one of them holds a position of authority, the situation takes on other dimensions. Feelings alone cannot resolve problems related to trust, freedom, or the ability to make decisions about one's own life.
And I think this is important because a relationship should not be judged solely by the intensity of the feelings it inspires. How the people involved behave also matters, as does how they make decisions and how much room they give each other to be who they truly are. Love can be a fundamental part of a story, but it does not automatically make every action right or eliminate the consequences of the decisions made.
The setting is another element that makes this novel distinctive. Perfumery, flowers, and scents are part of Emily's world and contrast with the political tension developing around her. I find this combination interesting because perfumes are often associated with memories, sensations, and delicacy, while the story introduces us to an environment where ambition, war, and power struggles can change the characters' lives from one moment to the next.
Without revealing important events, I would say that The King's Perfume is a story that invites us to look beyond appearances. Not everything is exactly as it seems, and the people we meet can surprise us when we discover their true intentions. It also reminds us that growing up sometimes means questioning what we have learned and finding our own way of understanding the world.
Among the phrases I decided to preserve in this tenth addition to my collection are some that represent the ideas and emotions the reading left me with. Just like with the previous miniatures, for me they are small fragments that allow me to keep a memory of the story and the reflections that arose as I moved through its pages.
And now my little shelf welcomes a new story, this time belonging to a universe very different from those I have collected so far. I like that this collection allows me to move from one genre to another and discover how each book finds its own way of leaving a mark on me.
With The King's Perfume, the tenth miniature is officially added to my Miniature Library. This reading also marks the beginning of a new saga, so there are still many things to discover within this universe. The story leaves several questions unanswered and sparks curiosity about how the events will continue in the next book, The King's Chains.
Now I would like to know your opinion. Have you read The King's Perfume? What did you think of Emily and Stefan? What do you think about romantic stories that also feature political conflicts and struggles for power? And if you have already read the entire saga, do you think it is worth continuing with The King's Chains?
