There are weekends that pass without glory, and there are others like this one, without big events, that settle in your chest and stay there, reminding you of what truly matters. This Saturday has been one of those, and even though there was no beach, no fancy restaurant, no complicated plans, this time it was just my home, my people, and the most beautiful sound in the world: children playing.
My nephews came to spend the day. They are a little girl and a little boy who, curiously, were born on the same day but in different years. A coincidence that always makes us smile at home, as if the calendar had wanted to give us a two-for-one in joy. She is 8, he is 6, and my daughter, who is already a full teenager, received them with that mix of affection and patience that you only have with younger cousins.
I confess that at first I had that silly thought of what are a teenager and two small children going to do together? The age difference sometimes seems like an abyss, but how wrong I was. Within five minutes they were sitting cross-legged with their phones in hand, competing in some video game or other. My daughter, who normally lives in her world of music and friends, transformed and became the leader of the trio, the one who explained the rules, the one who celebrated the points and consoled the defeats. The little ones looked at her with an admiration that cannot be faked.
After the video games came the drawings. They took out sheets of paper and colored pencils and lay down on the terrace floor as if it were the most comfortable bed in the world. From the kitchen, where I was preparing some snacks, I listened to them laughing and arguing about what color to use for the sun, or whether the dog should have big ears or small ones. My daughter drew something more elaborate, with shadows and details, while the little ones made scribbles full of life and spontaneity, and I stood watching them for a good while. There was no need to say anything.
Sometimes, in adult life, we complicate things so much and look for perfect plans, exotic getaways, experiences we can show off on social media, and we forget that the purest happiness is in these small things: a terrace, some colored pencils, the sound of three laughs mixed together, and the certainty that, for a while, everything is in its place. My teenage daughter, my little nephews, and me, watching them from just the right distance not to interrupt but close enough to feel part of that world.
When they left in the afternoon, the house fell into a strange silence, one of those that misses the noise. It was a beautiful Saturday, one of those that need no title or perfect photo, just a grateful heart and the certainty that family, when it comes together without pretensions, is the best plan in the world.
