For months now, I have been looking toward my neighbor's patio, and it is not unhealthy curiosity, it is pure and simple fascination with an orchid plant that lives there, oblivious to my devotion. I have no idea what species it is because I am completely ignorant on the subject. My knowledge is limited to what my eyes see, and it is that when it blooms, it fills with small flowers that are a whisper between violet and yellow, a combination so delicate that it seems hand-painted by a capricious artist.
Right now, the vain thing has no flowers, it only has those green and somewhat ungainly leaves that, nevertheless, hold the promise of a future spectacle. I look at it every day, like someone consulting a vegetable oracle. Sometimes I find myself with my gaze lost on her patio, imagining the moment when those small colored lanterns will light up again.
I must confess that, on more than one occasion, I have felt a bit like a spy, like a nosy neighbor of the old days, but with a botanical object of desire instead of a soap opera. I wondered if she had noticed my insistent gaze. Would she think I am rude?
And today, the universe has decided to answer all my questions at once. This morning, when I left, I found her on the landing with a knowing smile and her hands full, she handed me something. It was a small cutting of her plant, the protagonist of my daydreams, but it did not come in just any pot. It was planted, with a care that melted my heart, inside a coconut shell. The shell, brown and rough, served as a natural pot, and the small orchid peeked out timidly, with its roots clinging to that improvised refuge. It was the most original, tender and meaningful gift I have been given in a long time.
She explained that she had seen how I looked at it and that, like me, she had fallen in love with that variety of tiny flowers, that she did not know the name, but that it was easy to care for and that, with a little love, it would give me the same joys as it gave her. I did not know what to say, I could only stammer out a huge "thank you."
Now, I have it at home. It is a small, fragile thing, but full of future, that little piece of my neighbor's patio is now mine. I feel as if I had been entrusted with a secret, a treasure. I am so excited that I can barely concentrate on anything else.
I do not know if I will ever learn its scientific name, and I do not care too much either. For me, this plant will always be my neighbor's orchid, the one that gave me a little piece of her garden in a coconut shell.

VERSIรN EN ESPAรOL
No he sabido quรฉ decir, solo he podido balbucear un "gracias" enorme.
No sรฉ si algรบn dรญa llegarรฉ a saber su nombre cientรญfico, tampoco me importa demasiado.
