Small Things That Sustain Me #42 — Spilled Coffee

There are mornings when you start the day with a full head before you have even finished your first cup of coffee. That happened to me a few days ago.

I was making my coffee as usual. I left the cup on the table and, while looking for something else, tried to move it without paying much attention. The result was pretty predictable: the cup tilted and the coffee spilled across the table.

My first reaction was a very sincere “Oh, no!” I looked at the mess and, for a moment, felt that irritation that comes when something small interrupts a morning that already has enough things going on.

But this time, I laughed.

Not because watching coffee spread across the table was particularly funny, but because I suddenly saw myself from the outside. There I was, looking quite serious at a coffee stain as if something terrible had just happened. It seemed a little absurd to get angry with myself over an accident that could be cleaned up in a few minutes.

I found a cloth, wiped the table, and made another coffee. Nothing else happened. The cup was still fine, the table was clean again, and my morning simply continued where I had left it.

The funny thing is that other times I might have turned something like that into a small chain of bad moods. First the spilled coffee, then being annoyed with myself for being clumsy, then another little inconvenience, and before I knew it, I could end up feeling that the whole day had started badly.

This time I just laughed at myself and moved on.

I think we sometimes take ourselves too seriously, even with the smallest things. We want to do everything right, move carefully, avoid mistakes, and keep everything under control. Then, when something breaks that little sense of order, we get more upset with ourselves than with what actually happened.

It isn't always easy for me to find humor in things. Some problems need attention, and some mistakes have consequences. But there are also moments when all that is needed is to admit that I was a little clumsy and clean up the coffee.

Since then, when I remember that morning, I don't think about the spilled coffee. I think about the fact that, for once, I managed not to turn a simple accident into something bigger. And that also feels like one of those small things that sustain me: being able to laugh at myself from time to time.
