Without letting the world convince me to give up on dreams

alt

Today, on public transport, an acquaintance who was sitting next to me told me that she had left her profession to sell in a shop. She didn't say it with shame, nor with enthusiasm, but with a kind of practical resignation, like someone closing a door they are never going to open again. Then, as the bus moved through the traffic, she let out the phrase that stuck with me: "This is no time to try to fulfill your dreams."

I stayed quiet, not because I had nothing to say, but because I needed to understand why that statement made me so uncomfortable. And I think I know now: because it is a phrase I have heard too many times, from too many mouths, and it almost always ends up working like a prophecy that fulfills itself.

I understand where it comes from, and it's that we live in times that invite caution. The economy is tight, certainties are falling apart, and there is a collective voice that whispers to us that dreaming is a luxury from other times, something you can allow yourself when your finances are in order and the future looks clear. That logic has a trap: there is never a perfect moment, that day never arrives when everything is stable enough to allow you to pursue what truly moves you.

There is something deeper: when we stop defending our dreams, we don't only give up a result, we also give up a part of ourselves. Dreams are not decorative whims that adorn an already resolved life; rather, they are the compass that tells us where to walk, the energy that lifts us on a gray Monday, and the reason we accept certain sacrifices and reject others.

I am not saying that we should all give up stability and throw ourselves into the void tomorrow. I myself have had to juggle between what I need and what I long for, but there is a huge difference between adjusting the dream to the circumstances and burying it with the excuse that it is not the right moment.

alt

I also think about my acquaintance, and perhaps her decision was the right one for her, and it is not my place to judge her; but the phrase she used to justify it worries me, because she wasn't speaking only about her own case. She spoke as if it were a general truth, a law of the times, and the laws of the times, when repeated enough, end up governing our decisions without us realizing it.

That is why I want to defend the opposite, even if it sounds naive: precisely because the times are difficult, we cannot stop defending our dreams. They are what sustains us when everything else falters, and they are the proof that we are still something more than gears in a machine that needs us docile and tired.

alt

So yes, I still believe that dreams must be fulfilled, and not all at once, not always in the way we imagined at the beginning, but yes with the conviction that giving up on them is not maturing, but rather dimming a little.
