It’s 10:15 at night and there’s no electricity here in Havana, Cuba. My laptop’s running low on battery, so I’ve decided to share today’s Wednesday ride before midnight. Because, you know, at that hour the princess turns into a frog 😁. Jokes aside, it’s better to write a little here and bring you a smile or two than to sweat through the sheets trying (and failing, I know) to sleep… For those who enjoy quirky openings in posts, let me say I wouldn’t mind sweating the sheets while doing another activity—with dessert included. A flan is exactly what I’m craving. 😂
It’s insanely hot here, so that activity you see me doing in the video came with plenty of sweat. And the one that followed afterwards too. 😄
Let me tell you about a spot I went by. It’s the corner of 23rd and 14th in Vedado. Back in the day there was a cafeteria called El Rápido (The Quick)… ironic really, because what followed was a painfully slow decay.
The streets were almost empty—perfect for cycling.
As I passed through El Fanguito, on the border between Vedado and Nuevo Vedado, I decided to stop at the repair workshop to see if they could fix a problem with my spare inner tube. I saw heavy machinery clearing rubbish, and the ones in charge were either soldiers or young guys doing their compulsory military service.
Luckily, my problem got sorted out really quickly. And as I was leaving down the same street, I realised the reason for all that mobilisation. For a moment, I felt like Agatha Christie.
I found myself at the crime scene, and I paused to snap some religious writings… And I wondered who might have thrown away this chair… perhaps it was a parish priest’s seat.
Sometimes it all feels linked… or maybe that’s just me making it up in my head, but here’s what comes next…
So that’s why they were so keen on clearing the trash. My theory? There were protests and someone torched the bin. That’s why it’s all melted… though honestly, with this heat and the things I see, I feel like I’m melting too haha…
No, once again, jokes aside… on social media you can see loads of people fed up, burning trash in the streets. One of those blackout nights, they even hit a bank.
I went to the gym to lift some weights…
That little video at the start was shot near home. I biked, walked, crunched, lifted heavy weights, hung from a bar pulling my legs up to my chest, squatted, and did some deadlift thingy… Came back knackered, and now sleep won’t come.
