A Shower in Varadero

Hello dear Gems community,

In Varadero, you can learn not to trust a completely clear sky. There are afternoons when the beach is full of people, the sun is bright, the sea looks calm, and everyone seems to have settled comfortably into the plans they made for the day. Then, without much warning, the weather changes. A few drops become a sudden shower, and within minutes the beach begins to empty. I have watched this happen many times from the hotel. People gather their belongings as quickly as they can, grab towels, bags and anything else they brought with them, and run toward the covered terrace of the bar. Some laugh as they run, others try to protect their phones, and someone always arrives looking completely surprised, as if the rain had personally chosen them.

A few minutes earlier, everyone had been enjoying the beach. Now they are standing close together under the shelter, waiting for the shower to pass. What I find interesting is how quickly people adapt when there is no other choice. Nobody can negotiate with the rain. Nobody can ask the clouds to wait until they finish their afternoon at the beach. The only thing left to do is find somewhere dry and wait. Life has its own unexpected showers too. Sometimes a plan changes at the last minute. Something we were counting on does not happen. A person changes their mind. A situation takes a direction we never imagined. We can spend a lot of energy feeling frustrated because things are not happening the way we wanted, but that does not make the rain stop.

I think I have become more flexible with age, perhaps because experience teaches us that very few days follow the exact plan we had prepared for them. We can organize everything carefully and still find ourselves changing direction before the day is over. That does not necessarily make the day a bad one. Sometimes it simply becomes a different day. I also like what happens under the shelter when the rain arrives. People who were strangers a few minutes earlier suddenly share the same small space. Someone moves a chair so another person can sit, someone makes room for a wet bag, a child laughs at the rain, and adults look toward the beach waiting for the clouds to pass. For a moment, nobody seems to care that the original plan has been interrupted. They are simply there together, waiting.

Maybe peace of mind does not come from having control over everything that happens to us. Perhaps it comes from knowing where to take shelter when we cannot control what is happening. Sometimes that shelter is not a physical place. It can be another person, a conversation, a little patience, a sense of humor, or simply the ability to say, “Well, this was not what I planned,” and continue with the day anyway. The rain eventually stops, the beach becomes visible again, and people slowly return to their plans, sometimes carrying wet towels and laughing about the unexpected interruption. Nothing went exactly as planned, but perhaps it did not have to.
