Hello, GEMS friends.

Some conversations begin without any particular plan and end up lasting much longer than we expected. It can happen while sitting in the living room, having coffee, walking somewhere quiet, or simply sharing some time with someone we care about. Nothing extraordinary has to happen. Sometimes it is enough to start talking about one thing and let one idea lead to another.

I especially like those conversations in which the phone is simply forgotten on the table. Not because there is anything wrong with using it, but because for a while it stops being important. Nobody is checking for a notification, wondering who wrote, or looking at what is happening online. The person in front of us manages to have our full attention, and that completely changes the way we listen.

I think we have learned to listen in a slightly strange way. Many times, someone starts telling us something and, while they are speaking, we are already thinking about what we are going to say. If they tell us about a problem, we start looking for a solution. If they mention something that also happened to us, we immediately think about our own story. We may even be waiting for a pause so we can jump in. We hear the words, but we are not always listening to what is behind them.

Really listening requires something that sounds simple and yet we do not always practice: waiting. Letting the other person finish a sentence, even when we think we already know what they are going to say. Not interrupting to tell a similar story. Not immediately turning their experience into an opportunity to talk about our own. Sometimes all a person needs is to be able to finish saying what they feel.

And not everything someone tells us needs a solution either. There are moments when a person talks because they need to put their thoughts in order out loud. Maybe they are not looking for advice or a perfect answer. Maybe they simply need to feel that someone is there and that, for a few minutes, they can speak without having to compete with a screen, a notification, or another conversation happening at the same time.

I also like the pauses that exist in face-to-face conversations. Those little silences in which nobody feels that they have to answer immediately. We can think, look at the other person, take a sip of coffee and continue. On the internet, we are used to responding quickly, reacting quickly and giving our opinion quickly. A conversation in person can have a completely different rhythm.

Maybe that is why I call these conversations “analog.” Not because they are old-fashioned or because I think we should abandon technology, but because they have something that screens cannot do for us: they require us to actually be there. When someone is sitting in front of us telling us something important, we can notice the tone of their voice, a pause, a smile, a different look in their eyes. There are details that do not appear in a written message.

And there is also something beautiful about talking about things that are not important at all. Laughing about an anecdote, remembering something that happened years ago, commenting on a movie, talking about food, or simply changing the subject several times without any particular order. Not everything has to be deep to be valuable. Sometimes a seemingly ordinary conversation ends up becoming one of those moments we remember later.

I have realized that attention is also a way of showing affection. When we put the phone aside and really look at the person in front of us, we are saying without words that, at that moment, what is happening with them matters to us. We do not need to do anything spectacular. We just need to be there.

No necesitamos hacer nada espectacular. Solo estar.

Of course, it is not always easy. We have messages, responsibilities, work, news and many other things asking for our attention. We cannot live completely away from screens either. But perhaps we can choose some moments to recover this quieter way of having a conversation.

A Saturday afternoon can be a good opportunity. Prepare something to drink, sit down with someone and let the conversation unfold without looking at the clock or checking the phone every few minutes. Talk, listen, pause and continue. Sometimes we may discover that we had much more to say to each other than we thought.

Perhaps the most valuable thing about these conversations is not even what we end up saying, but the feeling of having been heard. We all want to have something to tell, but we also all need, at some point, to feel that someone is willing to stay and listen until the end.

In a world full of messages, comments, voice notes and notifications, there is still something very simple we can offer another person: our presence.

When was the last time you had a conversation that lasted much longer than expected and neither of you felt the need to look at the phone? What made it special?
