The other day, I was making yellow rice, the way we like to prepare it here in Cuba. I started looking through the herbs and seasonings I had at home: garlic, different spices, and some ají. I had most of what I needed, but when I went to get the onion, I realized I had run out.

I had to go out and buy some. As often happens when I go shopping in the neighborhood, I came back with a few other things I found along the way. One of them was a seasoning mix that a friend of mine, who sells products on the street, had recommended. She told me it was really good, so I decided to give it a try. I had never used it before, and I had no idea how it would turn out in the rice.

I also had some chicken broth I had prepared earlier, so I added that too. By then, I had several ingredients going into the pot, each with its own flavor and purpose. While I was cooking, I started thinking about how many things we can use to season a meal. Some add aroma, others bring out the flavor, and some can change the whole result if we use too much. Knowing what to choose makes a difference.

The same thing happens with people, although the comparison only goes so far. Everyone has their own way of being and something different to bring to a relationship. There are people who make us laugh even when we are not in the mood, others who listen without rushing us, and some who are good at finding a solution when we are stuck. There are also people with whom we get along well in one situation but not in another.

We do not connect with everyone in the same way. Sometimes we meet someone and the conversation flows without effort. With someone else, even when we try to get closer, we cannot seem to find much in common. That does not necessarily mean either person is at fault. We have different temperaments, habits, interests and ways of seeing things.

Of course, relationships are not recipes, and people are not ingredients to be chosen only for what they can offer us. Still, I think there is something worth noticing in the way different flavors can work together without becoming the same. A good combination does not erase the qualities of each ingredient; it lets them come together in a way that works.

My rice was a little experiment that day. I had used a seasoning I did not know, along with the ingredients I usually add. I had to trust my friend's recommendation and see what happened. The result turned out well, and I was glad I had tried something different.

In the end, the kitchen reminded me of something simple: we do not always need to do everything the same way. Sometimes it is worth trying a different ingredient, discovering a new flavor or giving something unfamiliar a chance. With people, too, a little openness can lead us to relationships we might not have expected.

Capítulo 12 · Miradas que descubren

Especias y alma
