It could be a household appliance, one of those that do everything and simplify the work in the kitchen, but in this case, it is about those who, being at home, must also learn to cope with the culinary arts.

Although I love to eat, one of the things I least enjoy doing is cooking. And not because I don't know how or don't like it, it's just that I have very little time to do it between work and other household activities, so I tend to get by almost always preparing the same thing.

My children's father applied himself to many things, but the kitchen was an almost diabolical space for him. He wouldn't even boil water, and when he saw the stove on, he would practically panic. For that reason, being a mother of two boys, one of my first determinations in their upbringing was that they should learn to cook, because I think it is fundamental that they should not be dependent on other people in that sense.

I consider that everything they can learn for their benefit and that I can teach them, will be a gain for both of them, because they help me and learn to be independent in the broadest sense of the word.

At the age of 4, Abraham was already helping with some simple things: squeezing fruits (oranges or lemons) to make juice, stuffing breads and even cutting bananas to make the tostones he loves so much. As he grew up I gave him other challenges, so that by the time he was 10 years old, he was able to marinate meat or chicken, make rice or noodles, of course, arepas too, and he began to dare to fry empanadas.

With Fabrizzio perhaps I have started a little later, since my work schedules give me just enough time to do what I can quickly, and there is no time to sit and explain or wait for him to finish some task. However, he is in charge of the sandwiches or filling the easy dough patties, assembles the burgers and a few other things.

They both clear the table, and if they are in the mood, help wash the dishes (which almost never happens, and which I welcome when it does).

This teaching process has been slower since the arrival of the second child, because with the differences between their ages, I have had to adjust to the levels of both of them to be able to teach them properly.

Sometimes they both want to do the same thing, sometimes Abraham (the older one) corrects his little brother in a bad way, who gets angry or starts crying. The good thing is that they don't lose interest, although sometimes the laziness to do things wins.

When to start?

With my eldest, I set him to do each thing at a different age. At 6, cooking, at 7, sewing (making ruffles, gluing buttons) and at 8, ironing (although we don't do it often at home).

hace_de_todo

Fabrizzio at 6 became in charge of stuffing. So on a good night (for me, obviously) Abraham is in charge of the arepas, while his little brother stuffs them and I just get to eat.

It's my little boy, who upon hearing me complain that I have to do all the things by myself, comes over willing to lend a hand. So sometimes he applies himself to folding clean laundry and putting it away, or some other household activity, because there is always something to do.

arepas

Currently, Abraham is going through a somewhat "bipolar" adolescence because sometimes he's in a good mood and sometimes he's so bad-tempered that even he can't stand it. But sometimes he applies himself, and when he does, it is a great help that I always thank him with a kiss and a big hug, filling his self-esteem basket with many positive things, and although he looks at me with a "Mom, it's not that bad" face, I know that I am planting good thoughts about himself inside his little head.

Maybe my method is not the most adequate, or maybe I am not as strict as I should be, but I am perfecting it by steps, because the idea is that they learn and do not resist. Sowing in them the value of collaboration at home is to subtract the entrance to the prevailing chauvinism in society, especially in Latin America.
