This book is not a Jane Austen novel in the traditional sense, but rather a collection of works written prior to her most famous and widely known titles—such as *Pride and Prejudice*, *Sense and Sensibility*, and *Emma*. *Juvenilia* gathers the texts Austen wrote between the ages of eleven and seventeen—pieces she used primarily to entertain her family—offering us a glimpse into her literary beginnings and early steps in writing; while today we have platforms like Wattpad (to name just one of many), in her time, a writer's "beta readers" were the members of their own family.
Este libro no es como tal una novela de Jane Austen, sino más bien una recopilación de todas sus obras escritas antes de las más célebres y conocidas por todos como "Orgullo y Prejuicio" "Sentido y Sensibilidad" y "Emma", Juvenilia recopila todos los textos de Austen desde los once hasta los diecisiete años y que ella usaba más que todo para entretener a su familia, es decir que en este libro podemos encontrar sus inicios, esos primeros pasos dentro de la literatura, hoy en día tenemos plataformas como Wattpad (solo por nombrar alguna entre tantas) pero en esa época los lectores beta de un escritor eran los miembros de su propia familia.
It is striking to discover just how different her early work is from what we see in her later writings; here, we do not find the kind of heroines who—while perhaps challenging the conventions of their day—remained essentially "politically correct." In the *Juvenilia*, however, the opposite is true: she mocks and thoroughly satirizes the literary clichés of her time through unconventional heroines—often thieves or simply selfish characters. In this book (and across several of these texts), Austen employs an "extravagant humor" to poke fun at the romantic novels popular in her era.
Resulta muy sorprendente comprobar que sus inicios distan mucho de lo que vemos más adelante en sus obras, aquí no vemos tanto romance esas heroínas que aunque quizá desafiaban las convenciones de sus tiempos, aún así seguían siendo políticamente correctas, sin embargo en los textos de Juvenilia son todo lo contrario, ella se burla, satiriza completamente los clichés literarios de sus tiempos con heroínas poco convencionales, a menudo ladronas o simplemente personajes egoístas. En este libro, (en varios de sus textos) Austen utiliza un "humor extravagante" para burlarse de las novelas románticas que se leían en su época.
The protagonists often have exaggerated reactions—such as weeping hysterically or fainting over trifles—methods through which the author specifically sought to ridicule the childish attitudes of female protagonists in many romance novels of her era. It is striking to see the talent the author already possessed at such a young age (between eleven and seventeen), as she demonstrated a coherent approach to plotting and character construction, as well as great skill in satire—a deceptively simple yet complex element, especially in Jane Austen's time.
Las protagonistas a menudo tienen reacciones exageradas como llorar de manera histérica o desmayarse por tontearías, métodos a través de los cuales precisamente la autora pretendía ridiculizar las actitudes infantiles de las protagonistas femeninas de muchas de las obras de romance de sus tiempos. De esta manera resulta sorprendente ver el talento que ya poseía la autora a su corta edad (entre los once y los diecisiete) pues ya mostraba una manera coherente de armar tramas y construir personajes, incluso gran habilidad para la sátira, la cuál puede parecer sencilla pero es un elemento complejo, sobre todo en los tiempos de Jane Austen.
