Just as Japan has a monument in honor of the loyal Hachikō—that noble dog—we in Valencia, Venezuela, have our own Casupo. He was a noble canine named after the very hill he arrived on as a mere puppy, and he passed away 18 years later, surrounded by the nature he loved so dearly. In his honor, a bust was erected to commemorate him, placed near the entrance to the municipal park I am about to show you: Cerro El Casupo Municipal Park. This mountain overlooks the northern part of the city; while it isn’t particularly high—especially when compared to Cerro La Copa in Montalbán—I find it to be much more physically demanding. You’re constantly exposed to the sun on one side of your face, and the trail features steep, rocky terrain that often requires you to use your hands. Consequently, reaching the summit becomes quite a challenge, especially if you aren’t in great physical shape or if it’s your first time making the climb.
The first thing my sister and I did upon arrival was check the trail map. Right then and there, we decided we would reach the summit of El Casupo—one of the most challenging and demanding peaks. However, since it was our first time, we knew we wouldn’t complete the entire route; it’s an extremely long trek, and attempting the full distance on our first visit would have been far too demanding.
At the start, my sister and I set off with the best possible attitude; we brought water, food, and plenty of energy. However, our energy levels fluctuated along the way—what with the slippery red soil, steep rocks, and scorching sun 😖. Even so, we never considered giving up; we simply stopped to rest at intervals to recover and catch our breath. These breaks made all the difference—without them, we would have ended up even more exhausted and likely would have given up on reaching the summit.
And finally, we made it! 😃 We reached the summit of Casupo, from where we have a beautiful view of the entire city of Valencia and its surroundings—we can even make out the silhouette of Lake Valencia. My sister and I are planning to go even further next time, to the other viewpoints; however, we were told that the summit we reached is considered the most challenging destination, due to how extremely difficult it is to access.
The sense of freedom is incomparable—freedom from that little inner voice that kept telling me I couldn’t do it. I was able to put my physical endurance to the test and prove to myself that I’m capable of overcoming challenges like this. Not bad at all for a first attempt—we’ll see how far I can go next time.
At the base—the foothills of the hill—you can enjoy the delights of nature: an idyllic landscape filled with the freshness of a stream teeming with fish and ornamental plants, accompanied by the song of birds that help you relax and find a sense of harmony. The air is clean, pure, and free from pollution—unlike the air down below, in the city itself.
Finally, on the way back—after we had come down the hill—my sister and I sat down to rest in the vast, soothing shade of the trees, watching the little birdhouses. We were very tired, but also satisfied with how we had done. We’re already planning our next excursion! 😃
Anyway, that was everything we did last Sunday; I hope you enjoyed it, and I highly recommend visiting El Cerro El Casupo if you ever have the chance to come to the city of Valencia (Venezuela).
