Mental health and well-being is just as significant as physical health, but it’s usually ignored in the workplace. Most of the companies already grant workers time off when they’re sick for physically related reasons, but stress, anxiety, fatigue, and burnout can be just as debilitating and interfere with an individual’s performance.
Providing your team a handful of dedicated mental health days per year will allow workers to bounce back before it becomes serious.
When an organization recognizes and encourages these breaks, their workforce generally becomes more motivated, more productive, and ultimately, more loyal to the company. Unfortunately, the fear that some workers will take unnecessary advantage of these days and get additional time off has kept many companies from embracing these opportunities. These are well-intentioned concerns that are a reasonable to address without stopping you from introducing an extremely valuable benefit for the entire workforce. Simply create fair and simple guidelines outlining that two to three mental health days will be granted annually, which is to be utilized as opportunities for employees to recover from stress, to recharge themselves from emotional exhaustion, and prevent burnout before it escalates.
You can deal with unusual patterns of these absences using your standard HR procedures in the same way you do with employee illness days.
Moreover, establish an organization-wide environment of trust. People that know they will not be punished or reprimanded for utilizing the benefits will do so responsibly and it will not turn into abuse. Also equip your management with knowledge of identifying burnout and encourage open, non- stigmatized communication about mental well-being with all of your team members.
Complement these days off by offering employees benefits such as work-from-home opportunities, counseling services, EAP benefits, and other wellness programs. At the end of the day, a work/life balance is essential for employee happiness, and these mental health days are a logical and practical element of maintaining that equilibrium. They show employees that the company cares for their well-being on more than a productivity basis, and ultimately boost productivity through engagement, creativity, and resilience.
In my experience, a few mental health days can pay off many times over in the form of reduced burnout, increased job satisfaction and overall workplace happiness, making it a win-win scenario.
