In my point of view, community service is the most effective method for instilling compassion, responsibility and the desire to support others in younger generations. Education does not mean only to obtain good grades, pass examinations and get diplomas. Education also involves being educated to be a good person who makes the society a better place.
I support the proposition that high school students should be active in community service before they complete high school. When a student does something for a person in need of help, it is experiential learning. Participate in community clean-up projects, plant trees, pass out food to poor families and visit with the senior citizens. This may be simple work, but it is learning experience.
Other times they have not understood how lucky they have been until they have seen how other young people live. Community service can open their eyes to the fact that not all young people are as lucky as they have been. It can make them more thankful, more patient and more understanding and compassionate to other young people.
For me, one of the other reasons to do other things, aside from the event itself, is to learn about teamwork and leadership. Students learn to work with others, to collaborate and to be assertive. These things can serve them as adults one day.
I disagree with this however, if a student doesn't perform community service hours, I believe he or she should not be denied the opportunity to graduate from school. Remember that some students have family obligations, money problems, or life problems. I believe schools should offer alternatives so that all students will be able to participate.
I believe that volunteering should not be something that is only done to acquire hours for a diploma. Volunteering, for me, should come from the heart. When people help people unselfishly, they are closer to reaching genuine compassion.
You don't have to be rich or powerful to do good. Sometimes, just giving your time, sharing your knowledge, or lending a hand is more than enough.
Ultimately, education must teach us how to apply our knowledge. A good education and a kind heart are the only things that can save us. A good education will develop the mind, but a good heart will make the world a better place.
