The role of justice in a peace society. For a peace society, justice and certainly responsible response to any crime are crucial factors. And while it is true that criminals should be punished, I think that sending them to jail should be aimed at not only punishment but also at correcting their behaviour.
Punishment is definitely a must for me because sometimes there's no option. If you do wrong to another being you must face the law. In this case innocent individuals are affected so we can't just disregard this pain that their families and loved ones endure. Just think about losing a loved one due to the wrong doings of someone, the pain, shock, sadness remains with you forever.
I also think that people can change. But when they have committed a crime, prison should give offenders the opportunity to acquire new skills, gain some guidance, and learn to accept the wrong they have done. You think some people do things wrong because they have made the wrong choices, or they have been influenced by very hard situations, and they may not be able to make the right choices.
Rehabilitation could help the community in that ex-offenders will need to re-enter the community at some point in the future. If they are properly educated, given some training and counseling and therapy, then they might be able to find decent work to turn their lives around and not recommit their crime.
But rehabilitation doesn't mean forgetting victims: their rights, protection, and healing should all be paramount. Grave offences demand severe penalties and may warrant imprisonment for the safety of the community. Victims must not be pressured into forgiving perpetrators, and the reduction of penalties for offenders shouldn't mean a denial of the need to make reparation.
I am a Christian, I believe justice and mercy are compatible. That we can acknowledge the wrongness of an action without giving up the hope that the wrongdoer can turn. That all are entitled to a justice the law can provide, and that the wrongdoer is not entitled to escape retribution.
In conclusion, I think we should have in our justice system the right mix of both punishment and rehabilitation. We have to punish wrongdoers to remind them that there are consequences for their actions, but then we have to get them on the right track. The world becomes a better place when the criminals no longer have the possibility of hurting us.
Good justice preserves the interests of victims, makes wrong-doers answer for their actions and offers all people who want to become better a chance to look ahead.
