Justice is really important for a society to be peaceful, when offenders are sent to prison, they are they to face the consequences of their actions, which is good enough, it's unfair to commit a crime and go unpunished, that doesn't serve justice. Going to prison helps in rehabilitation, punishment, and could also give them an opportunity to change and become better too. I solidly believe that prison can serve both purposes, it could serve the purpose of rehabilitation and punishment.

When a person commits a crime, they deserve punishment, there should be a consequence to face if caught committing a crime, if there are no consequences for committing a crime, crime will prevail in our society and that's a danger, people cannot deliberately hurt others, destroy lives and property or steal what does not belong to them and expect to walk away without facing the law.
Punishment serves the purpose of correction and nobody is above punishment and the fear of being punished has helped control the danger individuals pose to others.

However, I do not believe punishment should be the ultimate goal of imprisoning people, because if punishment is all they do to offenders, then what will become of their lives when they are out of prison? When they eventually come out to the society, they might as well become worse, because they have no skills and haven't learned anything about the outside world, they have only been constantly punished and now carry only grudges. This is why I believe while they face the consequences of their actions, they also deserve rehabilitation because it creates opportunities for them after prison, a life for them and an opportunity to heal from any crime that led to their imprisonment and this benefits society too and makes it safer. Rehabilitation really helps to inculcate changes and the offender is likely to return a changed person because they have gone through rehabilitation and also faced the consequences of committing a crime.

I understand the pain of victims, Imagine losing a loved one due to the violent attitude of a person or suffering physical injuries, or even a crime that involves sexual assault, you wouldn't consider that an offender deserves a second chance and even a rehabilitation, due to the emotional and psychological pain the victims go through, all they want is the offender to be punished for the rest of their lives, and this feeling could last for years and in most case's lifetime.

Inasmuch as the victim deserves justice, support, and the assurance that their experiences matter which they already got justice, it also requires that the offender faces the appropriate punishment and rehabilitation during their stay in the prison.
Rehabilitation is never an excuse to minimize serious offenses or pressure victims into forgiving those who hurt them, it doesn't impose forgiveness on the victim, it's their decision to forgive on their own.

Also, human change, committing a crime doesn't mean that the person will be bad forever, they could change too, commiting a crime doesn't mean that they are beyond redemption, and this is why I encourage rehabilitation, rehabilitation helps in many ways, helps them take accountability for their actions and change to better people

In conclusion, I believe there should be a balance; Justice should be able to balance accountability, rehabilitation and public safety. A good justice system shouldn't be measured only by how severely criminals are being punished, but rather by how effectively it prevents future crimes from happening and how innocent people are being protected.

I believe that justice should give offenders an opportunity to change, and society the reason to feel safe. Constant punishment without rehabilitation will only leave problems and issues unresolved by the end of jail time, that's because rehabilitation holds offenders accountable and makes them realize they are at fault and also see the need to change. Prison should serve the purpose of rehabilitation and punishment.
