You learn from life that we don't learn from life at all, particularly when trusting others. We trust others on a level that makes us think they will not betray us, disappoint us or backstab us. We give them our time, our love, our secrets, our loyalty because we trust they have good intentions. Unfortunately, over time, we learn that not everyone values our trust the way we do.
Trust is a wonderful thing, yet it also leaves us exposed. We reveal to someone what we typically hide from everyone else. We put our faith into their words, we defend their actions, and we overlook the red flags because we refuse to see our loved ones capable of hurting us. Unfortunately, there have been times where the people we have trusted most are the ones to teach us how to shield our hearts.
Disappointing someone can be very hard. It can put a doubt in your mind about your whole self, wondering if you made a mistake by trusting a person who you thought was safe. We become scared to break ourselves open again because we don't want to get hurt the same twice. But trusting someone is not a weakness; it is your heart and it is good.
The lesson is: Don't stop trusting people entirely, but learn how to trust appropriately. Not everyone will be worth every detail of your life, and just because people smile in our face doesn't mean their intentions are good. We need to watch behaviour, not promises, because true intentions are only shown through consistency, honesty and respect.
Other times, you don't tell others because: It's not about not sharing information out of malice or selfishness. It's because of boundaries and realizing that we deserve to have peace of mind. We can still be generous without being a pushover.
The older I get I've come to learn that trust is something that must be earned, not thrown around haphazardly. I can forgive, but I do not have to be so naive as to give people the same amount of trust as the next person. I can wish people well without letting them take me down.
For sure, Life is not about to grow suspicious of everyone, it's about getting wiser in the process. Sometimes the people that let us down will show us how to respect ourselves, set healthy boundaries, and be careful who we let in. Trust people with an open heart, but never forgo to guard your peace.
