Hello, GEMS friends.

There is a phrase that comes up often when we talk about social media: “Fear of Missing Out”, the fear of missing something. At first, I thought it was simply about wanting to stay up to date, but behind that feeling there is something more common. It is that little uneasiness that appears when we have gone several hours without looking at our phone and start thinking about what might have happened while we were busy with our own lives. What did someone post? What news came out? What conversation might be happening? It is something like the world continuing to move while we feel that we are obliged to catch up with it.

When I return to my phone after several hours and discover that, in reality, nothing happened that needed my presence. I see new photographs, videos, comments, messages, headlines and many interesting things, but almost none of them were urgent. And that difference between what is interesting and what is necessary seems increasingly important to me. It is okay to be curious about many things without turning that curiosity into an obligation.

Perhaps that is why I like the idea of JOMO, “Joy of Missing Out”, the joy of missing things, so much. I don't see it as a war against social media or as some kind of pride in living disconnected. Social networks also bring people closer, allow us to discover places, learn, share photographs and have conversations. The problem appears when being informed stops being a choice and starts to feel like an obligatory and urgent task.

In general, I like not knowing what is happening on the internet. It is not because I don't care about the world, but because I also want to be present in the small world around me. I can spend an afternoon cooking something simple, watering the plants, organizing a drawer, reading a few pages of a book or simply sitting near a window. While hundreds of things are happening outside and on screens, inside my home there is also a complete reality. A small reality, yes, but one that is large enough to occupy my attention.

I like thinking about that “micro-reality” of the home because sometimes we are too focused on realities that don't even belong to us. We know what someone on the other side of the country is doing, what a person we don't know bought, what opinion a post provoked and what topic is being discussed by thousands of people. But that can be entertaining, and it can also fill our heads with little pieces that we never quite manage to put in order.

When a quiet Saturday arrives and I see the opportunity to do something different: leave some things unknown. Not immediately checking the notifications on my phone. Not going in to see what is happening. Not feeling that every conversation needs our opinion. Not searching for every trend to understand what everyone is talking about. Simply not knowing can also be a form of rest.

“This is happening and I don't need to be there.” It does not mean indifference. It means recognizing that our attention has a limit and that not everything deserves a part of it. You can choose which news to read, which conversations to follow and also which things to let go.

No significa indiferencia.

We have reached a point where we have associated being up to date with being connected. But being connected does not always mean being present. I can spend an hour jumping from one post to another and end up feeling that I did nothing, even though I saw hundreds of things. I can also spend that same hour making coffee, listening to music or talking to someone and feel that I was really there. The difference lies in where I place my attention.

For me, the real luxury of a Saturday is not having many free hours, but being able to decide what to do with them without feeling that we are missing something. Not everything that appears on a screen deserves to become part of our memory. Nor does every comment need a response. Nor does every trend need our opinion.

Perhaps JOMO is about that: enjoying the peace of not participating in everything. Recovering the right to be bored for a while, to be at home doing nothing, to look out the window without photographing it, to finish a coffee without checking the phone. Because while there will always be something new happening outside, things are also happening within our own lives.

A plant grows slowly. A meal takes shape. A book waits on a table. A conversation stretches on. And perhaps, in the middle of such a strong need to know everything, one of the most pleasant things we can do is stay there for a while, without asking what is happening somewhere else.

And with that, I don't want to lose my curiosity about the world. I just want to learn to choose when to look and when not to. To be informed when I need to be, without feeling that I have to be permanently connected. To remember that missing some things does not mean missing out on life.

And you? What things have you learned to let pass without feeling that you are missing out on something important? Tell me in the comments, I would love to know your opinion, although of course I won't be keeping an eye out for it, hahaha.
