Greetings All
It's time to dive deep into the making of the current Fell Dragon. I hope you all enjoy the update.
Healer.
It wasn’t a person. It was a room, one which locked her in the moment she was brought into it. The light was sharp, almost as if this was a surgery room. However, the bed was soft and warm.
The wolf-like creature had laid her down gently and pulled the covers over her. She was convinced that she was going to bleed out here with no help, but then the pain started to lessen, and sleep overpowered her.
She had no idea how long she was asleep but when she woke, while the pain had all but disappeared, her right eye no longer opened, the left hurt, and her stomach was screaming in pain. It took her a while to realise that she was hungry. Starving. How long had she been asleep?
She sat up and rubbed at her right eye and was shocked to find that that part of her face was a mass of tender scar tissue. She jumped to her feet and looked around the room in desperation for some answers. As soon as her feet landed on the floor, they buckled, and she fell onto the ground with a thump.
She barely managed to get her hands out in front of her to stop her head from colliding with the ground. She was shocked to see her hands near skeletonised. She felt her heart rate start to elevate as panic set in. She turned to look at her legs. What she could see through the damaged and what appeared to be near threadbare clothing, most of the muscle she had spent years honing had wasted away.
“What is this?” she hissed, furious.
Anger bubbled up amongst the feeling of hunger, driving it away, and her to her feet.
“What is this?” she screamed at the empty room.
Nothing answered her.
Growling under her breath, she started to tentatively make her way around the room. In her exploration, she found a room with what looked like a swimming pool, and it was here that she found a bathroom with a mirror.
Her hair was greasy and, in some places, coated in black blood. When she raised the blacked hair to look at her right eye, all she saw was a thick scar that cut from between her eyes, through the right, narrowly missing the lower part of her right ear, and disappearing to round the back of her neck. The scar was an ugly red colour but looked as if it had newly healed.
She dropped her hair and stared back at her sunken face. She must have been asleep for some time. She had healed, somehow, but it had used a lot of her energy. This wasn’t a few days; this was several weeks. Her legs had been stiff, but she could still move them. Someone had been caring for her or she would have been dead.
She took a deep breath, and then after a few attempts, figured out how to get the water going in the basin before her. She filled it with lukewarm water and gently washed her face. She stopped herself from gulping down the liquid, worried that her starving stomach would just vomit it back up. It wasn’t the first time that she had been this starved.
She allowed the water to run over her cracked lips as she scrubbed at her hair. She wasn’t surprised to find it falling out in clumps. Eventually, she removed her threadbare clothing and used the now near-rags soaked in the water to wash any blood residue from her body. All wounds she had obtained during her fight with the Fell Dragon had been replaced with angry, red scars.
She drained the bloody liquid from the sink and opened the taps once more. She cupped one hand under the water stream and sipped at the water. It was sweet and cold, stinging her swollen tongue and cracked lips. She allowed herself two sips before stepping back.
She was clean but had no clothes to replace what was lying in a heap at her feet. She snorted and continued to explore the various rooms that branched off of the room she had woken up in. There were a handful. Besides the bathing area, there was an area that looked as if it had been a library at one point but was now trashed, another area looked as if it had been some sort of training area, but it too looked dilapidated. The more she explored, the more confused she got, until she got to the open door that looked out to a hallway.
She stood at the door for a few minutes with her head tilted. The area around the opening felt alive with power and she instinctively knew there was some sort of forcefield. Yet, her curiosity got the better of her. She stepped forward and raised her hand to touch it.
I wouldn’t do that if I were you.
She was already aware of the voices in the back of her mind. They had been whispering incessantly since she had fallen out of bed. This one came through clearly, talking to her and not the other voices.
As if on cue, it felt as if a bolt of electricity lodged under a nail, and she snatched her hand back.
Told you.
“I was testing the strength.” She said as she cradled her hand.
There was no external damage to it, but it was still tingling. She wondered if there was a limit to the strength of the door. However, before she could try again, the one-eyed wolf appeared. It squatted before the door and looked at her as if waiting for orders. She noticed that the eye she had clawed from its face had been replaced by a blinking light.
“Can you even see through that?” she muttered under her breath.
The beast twisted its head and looked as if it understood her.
“Can you understand me?”
It nodded once.
Ask it for some clothes.
She growled at the voice but complied. The wolf nodded its head and disappeared.
“Who are you?” she demanded.
We are you; you are now part of us. We are what you have been told is the Fell Dragon.
She had always been smart. She quickly realised that the table she had been strapped to, the thing that had been attached to her neck, had done this. She rubbed the back of her neck and continued to look around her. This room was too big for her. It was too big for the thing she had killed. This room had been used for something far larger. Was it indeed a dragon?
Don’t be stupid.
The library and training room made sense. There had been ways to occupy the one who was in the room, but they were trashed. Not all those selected to be the Serpent had the intelligence to use what was given to them.
Now you’re getting it.
She made her way over to the bed and ripped the blankets from it. She then upended the mattress to look at what was below it. She wasn’t even surprised to see a machine that had alien words flashing over its screen. It was what was monitoring and keeping her alive.
“Why?” she asked.
Now you’re asking the correct questions.
Despite that, she wasn’t given any answers, as the wolf-like creature returned with a bundle of clothing in its arms. It seemed a little startled by the destruction of the bed. She was more startled that it had managed to get into the room. She thought the forcefield would keep it at bay. Then a thought entered her head. The forcefield was to keep her in, not others out.
The more she thought of her predicament, the more she realised that she was trapped with no way out. The Heavenly had known about this. This was why she had been forced to have those surgeries, forced to fight the creature, and then abandoned to rot here. However, she wasn’t dead. She didn’t understand.
“Why am I here?”
You are the Fell Dragon.
“No, I killed it.”
You killed a rampaging beast. That is what you will become in due time. It’s what we all became. There is always a Dragon and a Champion.
She wanted to rage at the voices but knew it was futile. They were literally in her head, perhaps even figments of her imagination. She took a deep breath. There was no use in panicking. She wasn’t dead, and there was some level of care to keep her alive. As long as she was alive, there was a way to escape.
That thought made all the voices in her head laugh at her. It was clear that they too had felt this way at some point and had received a rude awakening. She had killed the Dragon as the Champion, and now that it was dead, she was the new Dragon.
“And they’re scared of my retaliation.” She realised.
Exactly.
The wolf had put the clothes before her and started to righten the room. She watched it as she selected what she was going to wear. The clothes were perfect for her current condition. The bed had monitored her carefully. She watched the creature as he placed the bed in the correct position. He scooped up the linen and was busy making his way out of the room when he stopped. He shook the linen and a piece of paper fell from the material. He then left without giving it a second glance.
A wish!
A favour!
That explains why no Heavenly have approached this facility.
The flurry of voices made her head ache and she went to sit on the bed. It wasn’t the information that she knew that formed a realisation, it was from the collective voices and thoughts that she realised what was going on.
“I see. They can’t risk coming back here because of the favour.” She looked at the paper lying on the floor.
It was still golden and there was no sign of age or blood on it.
“And it’s assigned to me. It can’t be destroyed but can’t be used without a Heavenly before me.”
A new rage was building inside her. She had been tricked and now she was being denied a promise. Her fingers dug into the mattress below her. She was trapped and couldn’t conceive a way to get out. Then the hunger rumbled in her belly.
A Dragon of want and hunger. That is unique. The cage won’t hold you as long as it did the rest of us.
“What do you mean?”
Dragons take on the characteristics of what they needed in life but were never granted. You had unobtainable wants.
“You don’t know me.” She snapped.
Oh, but we do. We all know each other here.
She felt the urge to throw the mattress across the room once more. Instead, she got to her feet and walked around the room to find anything she had missed. She made her way into the training room. It was filthy and a variety of machines lay scattered all around the room.
“I can use this.” She muttered.
Why bother? No matter how strong you get…
“If I am the Dragon, then I need to prepare for the next Champion.” She grinned.
The place was torn apart, but she was sure she could make use of what was lying around. With her current condition, it would take time to clean this place and make use of it. She started by pulling wrecked machines out of the room, ignoring the pain in her muscles, only to find the wolf creature next to her, copying what she was doing.
She didn’t question him but rather directed him to remove anything that was beyond fixing. She had no idea how long she was dragging things out of the room, but she was growing tired before she had managed to clear it.
You are still healing. You will need to sleep.
“If I sleep like this again, I will waste away.” She muttered as she leaned against the wall.
Slowly she lowered herself to the ground and the wolf creature came to sit next to her. He was covered in dust but didn’t seem to mind.
You must feed.
