Greetings!
The massive book is being edited and I am already onto a new book. A nice, relaxing gardening book.
Despite wanting time last week to work on Fledgling, I really haven't had the time or energy to do so. Don't know what I am going to give you all to read once Fell Dragon is done. I will need to hurry up and write!
Anyway, please enjoy today's update!
Several voices echoed the same sentiment, and she couldn’t help but feel that they wanted her to descend on the creature next to her. She was hungry, but not so much that she would tear into him.
“No.” she shook her head. “Food, just regular food is fine.”
This made the wolf’s ears perk up.
“Food?”
Hearing it speak made her back away quickly, as she stared at it in horror.
“You can talk?”
“You can, therefore, I can.” It said.
“How?”
She rubbed the back of her neck and together with the information from what she now understood were past dragons, she slowly started to understand this creature’s function.
“This prison traps me by the very thing that makes up my being.” She got to her feet and made her way over to the door.
The wolf watched her as she brought her hand close enough to feel the buzz of the invisible door.
“My blood was spilled but that isn’t what is keeping me here, at least not completely.” She touched the forcefield.
For a second there was nothing, and then she was launched across the room. The wolf managed to catch her, so she wasn’t thrown into the wall, but the damage had already been done. Her right arm had all but been obliterated. Shards of bone were visible in what looked like ground meat, and the agony was overpowering.
She was so shocked, she saw the damage and felt nothing for a few seconds, and then the pain reflected the injury. While she verbally screamed her agony, the voices in her head jeered and mocked her for her stupidity.
“The God damned machine.” She hissed when she got her voice back. “Gives power and traps me here.”
Return to sleep.
“No.” she grimaced as she pushed away from the wolf.
However, the wolf held onto her injured arm, its paws dripping blood.
“Food?” it asked once more.
She collapsed to the floor, not knowing where to put pressure on the injury she had caused herself. The wolf looked down at her, waiting for an order she couldn’t think of, much less try to communicate with him. She took a few shuddering breaths in and then stammered.
“Fix this.” She begged.
It’s a tool, it can’t think!
She shut the voices down with a grunt of pain as she struggled to sit up. She continued to look the wolf in the eye and said again. “Fix this.”
It looked confused for a second, so she tentatively reached a hand out to touch his bloodied arms. She aimed to only take a little of his essence to show him what she needed. Her injury made her too eager, and she took more than she had wanted to. He snatched away his arm and fled from the room.
It’s an animal. Just because it has speech because of you, doesn’t mean that it can help you. Go to sleep.
“No.” she shook her head.
The boost of energy she had stolen was enough for her to get to her feet. She clamped her left hand around the bleeding mess, still not sure if she was going to stop the bleeding. She was lightheaded and realised that remaining on her feet would be a bad idea. She limped toward the bed and nearly collapsed when she got close to it.
She sat down and then lowered her head to the pillow. She was tired and the pain was starting to disappear. Was this the strength of the prison she was in? She wasn’t sure, and she didn’t want to know, as her eye started to grow heavy.
There was a thump in the room, and she groggily opened her eyes. There was another wolf in the room. It wasn’t the one with the red blinking eye, but another. It seemed old, white-muzzled, and cowering before her. The thing smelled of fear. She wasn’t sure what it was doing there until she felt every muscle fibre screaming at her to feed.
This time, she didn’t resist. The old creature didn’t put up much of a fight against her as she pinned his neck under her knee. She then placed her hand along its chest and allowed her ability to do what it needed to do. The power her father had been so ashamed of was one that allowed her to take the lifeforce of anything she touched. It had kept her alive when he had locked her in rat-infested rooms, refused to feed her, and refused to let her get medical attention. The treatment had allowed her to improve her hunting skills, and better yet, she knew how to use the energy taken to help with pain and hunger. She could rebuild her arm in time, but she needed more lifeforce than the creature dying below her had though.
A blow dislodged her, and she almost howled in fury. The red-eyed beast stood before her and her meal. She needed that meal if she was going to heal. She needed it to feed her hunger. She wasn’t going to allow him to stand in her way. Just as she was about to launch at him, he raised a hand.
“Wait.” He begged as he stood between the elder and her.
She was starving. She hadn’t realised how hungry she was until she had started to feed. Now that she had had a taste, she needed more. The hunger was so powerful that it had banished the voices from her mind. She felt how her energy dripped from her fingers and she found it difficult to concentrate on forming the weapons she needed.
The wolf, realising that he and the elder were in serious danger took another step forward, hoping to distract her from the weakened wolf that was trying to crawl away. The new Fell Dragon snapped her attention to the other wolf that was making its way toward her. He was younger, stronger, and would make a better meal. Before she could jump at him, he opened his arms and welcomed her to feed on him.
“You’re hungry. I understand. Let the elder live. I will make a better meal.”
Her brain managed to reign in her hunger, and she sank to all fours with tears running down her face. It hadn’t taken much for her to descend into what she had been fighting. The hunger had been so strong that she was barely managing to keep it in check at this point.
“Leave.” She ordered as she placed her forehead flat on the metal below her and covered her head with her arms.
The wolf took a step forward, but her head snapped up to look at him and she screamed angrily, “I said LEAVE!”
He didn’t hesitate this time. He bolted on four legs, only pausing to clamp his jaws around the back of the neck of the elder and dragged him from the room. She screamed then as she broke the fingers on her left hand as she tried to dig them into the metal. She continued this until there was nothing more left in her to scream.
Was this insanity?
Everything hurt. It felt as if her body was on fire and the hunger kept creeping back into her mind.
“I am not mindless. I am not an animal.” She muttered over and over as she slammed her forehead into the floor again and again.
Blood splatters eventually littered the floor and agony lanced her skull. Pain was the only way she could ground herself. It’s all she had ever known. Just as she started to dig the ruined fingers on her left hand into the ground again, she felt a furry paw on her hand. She looked up to see a maw coming at her face. She flinched and opened her mouth to cry out in surprise when a tongue was dragged over her forehead. It was warm, like the tongue of the puppy she had had so many years ago.
Fresh tears streamed down her face as the tongue continued to clean the cuts along her forehead. She was in shock, in pain, and felt trapped, but there were other feelings starting to emerge. Feelings she hadn’t experienced in so long.
A pair of furry arms pulled her into a furry chest and held her tight. She didn’t even try to struggle. What was the point? Not only was she trapped but she was incapable of healing if she couldn’t feed.
“Eat, slow.” Said the voice that rumbled in the chest that held her.
“Too hungry.” She muttered.
“I am strong. I can stop you if needed.”
“I don’t want to.” She muttered.
“You cannot die.” Said the wolf. “Others have tried, and they suffered and healed in time. It takes longer if you fight. Give in for now and fight later.”
The arms held her tightly. She had no option. She never really had options. She wrapped her broken fingers on her left hand around the thick fur that was close by and allowed her being to feed. She tried to control her need, but it was difficult.
Sleep.
The voices were back, and she could no longer block them.
Time passes faster if you sleep.
“What is your name?” she mumbled to the creature, trying to stay awake.
“You defeated me, so you may name me.”
She pulled back to look up at the maw and a red blinking eye. Sleepily she mumbled, “Red-Eye.”
The Wolven nodded his head.
“You’re trapped too?” she asked as her eye closed.
“Yes.”
“I will free us, one day. We will both be free.”
And there you have it. How the Fell Dragon and Red-Eye formed their bond. See you all on Friday! Happy voting tomorrow South Africans!
