Greetings Readers
I hope you are well.
For the next while, I will mostly be sharing the healing journey for Kay while mentally preparing the for time shinanagins that Saita will be jumping though.
Thank you to everyone that has reached this poitn with me!
Silens came to consciousness with a shock. For a moment, she hadn’t remembered going to bed. She was so tired. The last thing she remembered was trying to give Kay some life force. It was meant to be just enough to get her through the night, but she had collapsed. And then…then…
Silens jumped from bed and raced to Kay’s side. As she pulled the curtain aside that separated the room from the hallway, she saw Kay sleeping fitfully and Saita sitting in a chair she must have dragged into the room from somewhere else in the house. She wasn’t sleeping but rather leaning forward with her elbows on her knees and her chin resting upon her interlaced fingers. Her focus was on the woman in the bed, and she didn’t even look up as Silens entered the room.
“Daughter?” asked Silens after standing, watching Saita, and the woman didn’t move.
Saita sat back and seemed to be chewing on her tongue with the right set of her teeth. She didn’t look at Silens but continued to keep her gaze on Kay. Silens followed her gaze. There was more colour in the girl’s face, but nothing had changed except that Saita had given the promised energy. Far more than Silens had expected her to give.
Silens was about to query Saita again when we heard Mitis stirring. Saita’s only eye focused on the entrance, but she said nothing. The older woman quickly exited the room and gave Mitis busy work that required her to return to the village for more assistance. Silens was loath to send her by herself while her son lay sleeping in her room, but she understood the King’s hunters were in the forest and would likely escort her when they stumbled across her.
Once she was sure the Mitis had left and wouldn’t return, she returned to Kay and Saita’s side. She was surprised to find Saita kneeling next to Kay, foreheads pressed tightly together. The old queen was whispering under her breath for a long time before she got to her feet and faced the old warrior.
“You were right. I had no idea what she had been through.”
Silens was sure she was referring to their father, but something in Saita’s face told her otherwise.
“She is similar to Bolx’s Kaiden.” Saita continued as she pressed a hand into the centre of her chest, “But her initial power wasn’t like us mimics. No, she deviated. The Heavenly made a terrible mistake choosing her to be a Dragon. Shareik, what were you thinking? Why her?”
Silens wasn’t sure what Saita was babbling about.
“She had no genetic backing for the system like the Grey-masked butcher and me. She and Kaidan were forced to wear this in agony.” Saita continued to press her hand into her chest. “Shareik saw to it and so much more. How much influence did he have? I don’t understand.”
Saita sighed and looked to Silens with a sad smile. “Mother, I cannot stay. This will likely be the last time I see you.”
“What are you going to do?” Silens had already made peace with the fact that she would never see Saita, so this visit had been a blessing.
Saita paused. What was she going to do? What could she do? What powers did she really have now? Her mind was a buzz with things she could do, things she wanted to do, but could she do it?
Then she remembered her future self. She had created a Time Maw. How had that happened? She hadn’t mentioned it, but had implied that her version of Kay had been sacrificed to it, but that hadn’t stopped it. Saita was left with far more questions and even fewer answers.
“I don’t know.” She admitted. “But there are things I still have to do.”
She looked to where Kay was, and a pang of pain and hatred swirled in Saita. Knowing what she knew now didn’t make the old hate disappear, but she understood. She understood far more than she wanted to. It had been a mistake to go into Kay’s mind when she had been so defenceless.
“She will think I abandoned her, but I won’t. I will be back. I just don’t know when. Tell her that for me.” Saita said softly. “Mother, protect her.”
