A Walk to Los Chorros Park

I had the opportunity to visit a park located east of our city; I hadn't been there before. From the moment social media started buzzing about its facilities, my husband and I planned to visit. Overwhelmed by all the advertising, I wanted to take a stroll and experience it for myself.

Here's my adventure: we took the Caracas Metro to Los Dos Caminos station; upon exiting, we hopped on a public van waiting in front of the station. It traveled through the Los Dos Caminos neighborhood, and some passengers got off along the way. Before long, we were at Los Chorros Park. Its entrance is separated by a long green fence that seems to enclose the natural vegetation, with lush trees promising a peaceful and refreshing stay.

Entry is free for seniors; first, I read the park rules and begin my connection with nature on a rocky, medieval-looking mountain. Lush vegetation surrounds us along the paths and trails; just a few meters away, we see a kiosk selling snacks in case we want some along the way; they offer drinks, coffee, hot chocolate, and water.

I began my exploration along bamboo paths that crisscross, forming arches; the high, rocky walls enclose the mountain, which is covered in lush vegetation, protecting the park and the enormous trees that grow within this ecosystem. Here, a stream flows down from El Ávila National Park; it's called Tocomé and it's the source of the waterfall in Los Chorros Park.

The walkways, open spaces, and cement benches and tables are man-made; they are arranged in the park to give visitors some comfort where they can sit and spend time amidst the fascinating landscape.

But the real adventure lies in exploring every path and climbing the different staircases that lead to secluded and unique spaces. They give you the feeling of being the only person there. You only hear the distant shouts of children and the sound of the water cascading down, crashing with all its force to fill the river. It trickles over the stones, turning a brownish hue from the mineral sediments carried down from Mount Ávila and from the debris eroded from the enormous rocks.

The path leads me to the end of the park, where we find the refreshing waterfall, a natural beauty nestled within the city. Simply admiring it brings harmony and peace. And that's not all; you can also take a dip, if you're prepared. I regret not doing so; it's always good to enjoy natural water rich in minerals, as it's said to rejuvenate us, ha, ha, ha, or so they say.

And I continued walking, admiring the variety of plants in the park, its flora, watching the people who came, bathing and enjoying themselves with their families, surrounded by nature, the children splashing in the water, and all the joyful noise. Besides admiring so much beauty, I followed a beautiful butterfly, hoping it would land so I could capture its lovely sky-blue color; I didn't manage it. It's an environment that, in addition to providing rest and relief from stress, also protects the countless species of plants and animals that inhabit this ecosystem, which serves as their refuge.

That is why it is necessary to take care of the environment, to not pollute it and to comply with the rules when we enter these natural sanctuaries, which only provide us with well-being, peace and happiness, since simple contact with nature fills us with energy and strengthens our mind and spirit.

Visiting this park exceeded all my expectations; it was a day of intense emotions. I enjoyed playing with the children in the park, participating in an educational game. They taught us about being mindful of the environment and how to reuse solid waste to create new products. An experience I hope to repeat.
