Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you again and return to this community. I hope you are all enjoying an excellent day.
Today I was walking around the city and my steps took me to one of the most famous and well-known streets in Havana. If there is a street in the Havana neighborhood of Vedado that has history, it is Línea. It is not the widest or the busiest, but you walk along it and feel that you are stepping into the living history of Havana. It all begins with the name it earned thanks to a streetcar that used to pass through there called la cucaracha, a little steam machine that came from Prado and San Lázaro, and since it ran on rails, well, people called it Línea and that name stayed forever, even though there was a time when they tried to change it, but the people, who are wise, kept calling it the same.
The obligatory stroll begins, without a doubt, at the Mella Theater. Located on Línea, between A and B, this coliseum bears the name of the revolutionary Julio Antonio Mella, although before, in its younger years, it was the luxurious Rodi cinema. Before and now, this place is a source of pride for the neighborhood and for the country. The facade, with its tower projecting outward and that curtain wall of glass and aluminum, still commands respect. I have visited it many times to enjoy different shows and theater productions.
Inside, the hall has more than a thousand seats, and its stage has hosted everyone from Bertolt Brecht to the greatest comedians in the country at the Aquelarre Festival and other events. I remember taking my children more than once to see children's shows and the circus. It is lovely to stand in front and see how people still line up to get in, because the Mella is not a museum; it is a theater that is still active.
But Línea is not just the Mella Theater. A little further along, almost next door, is the Trianón movie theater. And if you keep walking, you come across the Casona de Línea, a jewel that since 1970 Raquel Revuelta turned into the headquarters of Teatro Estudio. The Adolfo Llauradó hall also operates there, and there is an aroma of the stage and bohemian life that you will not find on just any corner.
The walk along Línea also has its spiritual side. On Línea between C and D is the Parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with its 74 meters of height, which is the tallest religious temple in Cuba and a marvel of Cuban architecture. Although the poor thing is somewhat battered by time and lack of maintenance, the neighbors still love it as the relic it is.
And in front of this imposing church is the Casa del ALBA. A place where the art and culture of Latin America come together.
Of course, today's Línea is not the one from before; time and the situation in Cuba have made it lose its former splendor. But even so, the street has a soul. There are many colonial houses and modern buildings that adorn it. Some are workplaces and others are residential apartments.
Línea is a street that resists, that keeps memory alive and that, despite everything, continues to be one of the most endearing strolls one can take through this Vedado of ours.
