Noris, la amiga que me dejó mi hermana/Noris, the friend my sister left me (Esp-Eng)
Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you again and return to this community. I hope everyone is enjoying an excellent day.
There are friendships that aren't sought out; they arrive on their own, as if destiny placed them in your path. That's what happened with Noris. She was, first, my sister's friend. One of those true friends, the kind who stays for dinner, laughs until their belly hurts, and shares secrets that not even family knows. I watched her from a distance, with affection, but without getting too involved, because that was my sister's world.
When my sister passed away, everything turned upside down. You don't even know how to carry on, let alone with friendships, which sometimes get lost along the way. But Noris didn't get lost. On the contrary, she stayed closer. And so, without really meaning to, I inherited her. Because when you lose a loved one, they also leave you gifts, and Noris was one of them.
This week Noris came to visit me, and not just me: she also spent time with my parents. Imagine the joy in the house. My mother, who never stops talking when she's lucid, found in Noris a first-rate listener. And my father, who is quieter, sat down to listen to them and every now and then let out a laugh of the kind you didn't even know he had. Noris has that gift, of making people feel at ease, as if you'd known her all your life.
We spent the day talking about everything and anything. About my sister, of course, who is the thread that binds us. We laughed remembering her craziness, her antics, that way she had of telling everyone off without offending anyone. Noris told me things I didn't know, little stories about the two of them that made me see my sister with different eyes. And we also cried, of course, but a good cry, the kind that cleanses.
We ate rice with chicken, ripe plantain, and a salad my mother made especially for Noris. Because in this house, when Noris comes, we cook as if it were a party. And the mid-afternoon coffee is a must, nice and strong, with a conversation that stretches until the power goes out. Since she lives quite far away, she stayed to sleep at my house and I took the opportunity to get my eyebrows done by her and, since she's an excellent seamstress, I also gave her some fabric so she could make me a dress.
The beautiful thing about this visit was seeing Noris share with my parents. It wasn't an obligatory visit, one of those you make just to fulfill a duty. No. Noris sat with them, asked about their health, about the neighbors, about life. My father showed her the plants in the patio, and my mother showed her a pile of old things she keeps in the room. Noris, with that patience that characterizes her, listened and celebrated every detail.
When she left, the house felt a little emptier. But it also felt fuller of memories. Noris is one of those people who leave a mark, who don't leave completely because they stay in the anecdotes, in the laughter, in the affection. I thank my sister, wherever she may be, for leaving me Noris. Because inherited friendships are the most valuable: they come with history, with affection, and with the promise that what is truly loved is never lost. Noris isn't just a friend, she's family. And this visit reminded me of that once again.
