Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you again and return to this community. I hope you are all enjoying an excellent day.
Today I return here to tell you about the news from my backyard. Having a green backyard planted with food plants is much more than an aesthetic choice; it is an investment in well-being, sustainability, and community. My father and I love growing our own food, even on a small scale; it reconnects us with natural cycles and gives us back control over what we eat. A backyard with aromatic herbs like basil or rosemary, vegetables like tomatoes and lettuce, or fruit trees like lemon trees, guarantees fresh food, free of pesticides and with a higher nutritional value than products that travel long distances.
And here is the news. Well, it turns out that after thinking about it a lot, my father decided to raise rabbits for consumption again. He bought three cages and made a large one himself for when the baby rabbits are born.
He is a specialist in that subject; he already raised them at another time, and we spent many years eating the rabbits he raised. It is still early because he only has two young female rabbits and one male that are not ready for reproduction. But in a few months the results of his management will be seen.
Rabbit meat is very soft and tasty; we have enjoyed it many times. It stands out for its high protein content and low level of fat and cholesterol. It is highly prized in cooking, ideal for stews, roasts, or grilled, and it is part of healthy diets. The secret to cooking a rabbit fricassee so that it turns out very tasty is to completely remove the skins, the fat, and that transparent slime that covers them.
My father and I feel very proud to produce part of our food; in this way, we contribute to reducing the carbon footprint. Even a small space like ours can become a refuge for biodiversity. Here there are not only plants; a great variety of fauna also coexists.
On the other hand, nature is capricious. My father was planting several passion fruit plants for a while with the hope that they would take, and they did not. However, two were born without us having planted them; one of them already has a medium-sized fruit with which I plan to make a delicious sweet.
We also have okra; these take longer than others, and they are of a variety that my father planted for the first time. They grow a lot and with abundant foliage, but their fruits are just as large.
For the first time, my dad also planted a few garlic cloves here, and they are already growing; we will see if they do well because that takes time.
For some strange reason the cilantro disappeared little by little; my dad says it is possible that the slugs ate it.
The bananas continue to bring us joy. At this moment there are five bunches in full growth. And among all of them, one stands out that has grown in a rather strange and peculiar way. One section of the bunch was left without bananas, continuing farther down with other hands. Something we had never seen and find curious. Things of nature.
In times of economic uncertainty like the one being experienced in Cuba, a family garden offers tangible relief and a sense of self-sufficiency. Caring for an edible backyard is an act of mental health: it reduces stress, promotes gentle physical activity, and provides the satisfaction of seeing grow what later nourishes our family. In short, a green backyard planted for food is a small ecosystem that teaches us to live in a more conscious, resilient way, connected with the land.
